  5. AWS introduces a new blog channel dedicated to quantum computing by Ather Fawaz Image via Wall Street Journal Back in August last year, Amazon introduced its end-to-end quantum computing service. Dubbed Amazon Braket, the service provides remote access to quantum computing simulators and real quantum hardware. In December, the firm added support for Pennylane and introduced a new tensor network simulator that could simulate 50 qubits on Braket. In line with the efforts to expand the accessibility and usage of quantum computers, Amazon Web Services (AWS) debuted a new blog channel dedicated to quantum computing today. It will be a place where the company plans to share technological and scientific developments in quantum computing. In addition to that, tutorials, customer stories, and experiments will be highlighted as well. In the first blog post, Simone Severini, the director of Quantum Computing at AWS wrote: On this new AWS blog channel, we’ll share insights as the field develops, including information on some of its technological and scientific developments. To keep things practical, we’ll showcase customer stories, tutorials, and introduce experiments you can run yourself. In addition to AWS technology, news, and opinions, we’ll give a voice to the quantum computing community, from groups building quantum hardware, software developers, algorithms designers, to researchers. AWS' quantum computing blog seems similar to other dedicated newsrooms like Microsoft Quantum and IBM Q's research blog that focus primarily on highlighting quantum research and technologies. The last few years have courted a lot of support for quantum computing and while it is still early days, industry frontrunners are investing heavily in realizing commercial-scale quantum computers. It will be interesting to see what the future has in store for quantum computing.
  6. Google introduces new features to make travelling easier by Ather Fawaz Google has introduced a new set of features for google.com/travel that build on top of already-existing features to help users plan out their next trip. Previously, Google notified users about whether the prices for a certain flight route were low, typical, or high. Starting today, users will now be able to see the same details for their already-booked flights and itinerary. Google claims that it will also display a history of price points over the previous months for certain flights that it tracks. On top of this, the website will also be forecasting the price for each flight route that it tracks given the trend it has shown in recent months. Interestingly enough, the company is also claiming to refund the difference of the travelers' ticket money if prices drop lower than what Google predicted. Starting this week, google.com/travel will also start recommending hotels, rooms, places to visit, and things-to-do at the travel destination. Previously, Google added a calendar entry to booked flights in the calendar app to notify the traveler about their flight. However, users will now see that their complete itinerary will be added on the aforementioned website in a timeline for convenience together with useful tabs at the top to help in planning the trip. In the official announcement, Google wrote: Once you’ve searched for hotels for your destination and dates, click on “Where to stay” at the top of your hotel results. For each neighborhood you’ll see a description, the average price and more. Recently, Google launched its AR-powered Live View features for all users. Although that feature targets pedestrians navigating through cities and towns, Google's new updates to its travel website, which are targeted more towards general travelers, can be used in conjunction with it to enhance the entire traveling experience.
  7. The point of this thread is for members to list all their profiles in social networks along with personal websites, blogs, tumblr, online profiles (like about.me), etc. This way we can know each other better and create a network of interests that don't necessarily revolve around tech. Rules: 1.- No sites with obscene or macabre imagery. 2.- No sites with illegal software. 3.- If posting a blog or tumblr, please, include a line telling us what is about. 4.- Have fun.
  8. Google Photos can now integrate with your WordPress.com blog by Florin Bodnarescu Back at the beginning of March, WordPress.com stepped up its integration with Google Docs via the release of a plugin, which allowed users to post or save drafts to their blogs directly from within Google Docs. Later that same month, handling of media also received a bit of an upgrade. The latest addition to the platform concerns both media handling and a Google product. In a post on its official blog, WordPress.com has revealed that the Automattic-owned platform will be able to integrate with Google Photos, thus making it a little easier for those who want to use the pictures stored on the Google service in their blog posts. For this to work, you basically need to change the source of your Media Library from WordPress to Google Photos, as shown in the screenshot. When you do this for the first time, you'll be asked to connect your Google account, and then you're all set. After changing the source, your most recent Google Photos uploads will show up in your Media Library, and to use them, you just need to select the desired photo and click insert. If you happen to have a WordPress.com blog which includes video hosting, your most recent videos stored on Google Photos will also be able to be inserted into your posts just as easily as their still counterparts. Those running self-hosted WordPress blogs will be able make use of the same functionality via the Jetpack plugin. More information is available on the dedicated support page. Image via WordPress blog

  11. Emily Graves, 29, is a mom of two who manages to save her community millions of dollars a year with just her weekly grocery list. She says anyone can do it. By day she?s a typical working mom living in Ottawa, Kansas. But it?s her hobby, creating a shopping list that compares sale ads, that?s turned her into a retail rock star. ?The comp list is a spreadsheet of all the deals from local grocery stores. I look up ads from 25 different stores and find the best deals for the groceries,? Graves explains. Her price comparison spreadsheet allows her to buy everything she needs at one store that price matches. The comp list includes dozens of everyday items, such as cheese, cereal, toothpaste and laundry detergent. Graves began compiling the weekly list two years ago for herself when she was a stay-at-home mom. ?We needed to save money, and we couldn?t really think of any different way to save on our budgets. So cutting groceries was going to be the best option for us,? she says. At first, she sent the list to her mother for fun. Soon, friends were asking for it. It continued to spread through word-of-mouth, and now Graves has 20,000 weekly readers through her blog, Twitter, Facebook and an email blast. The list itself has grown, too, and it takes her 20 hours to complete it. ?I?ve always found coupons to be very time consuming,? she says. ?They?ll expire, or I?ll forget about ?em.? This month Graves is featured in All You magazine. Readers and a panel of judges, including myself, voted her "America?s Smartest Shopper" for the incredible savings generated by the list. Graves surveyed her readers last year and learned the average savings is $80 a month. Even if only half her readers save that much, that?s nearly a million dollars a month and $9.6 million over a year. more & video
  12. A 78-year-old man has killed himself inside the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris in the French capital, police say, causing its evacuation. The man pulled out a shot-gun and shot himself through the mouth beside the main altar shortly after 16:00 (14:00 GMT). He has been named as Dominique Venner, an award-winning far-right historian. Mr Venner had recently been involved in the campaign against the government's decision to legalise gay marriage. On Saturday, President Francois Hollande signed the bill into law. Police said Mr Venner had made no statement before killing himself, although a note was found next to his body. They did not disclose its contents. Earlier on Tuesday, he had written on his blog a damning critique of the same-sex marriage bill. "New spectacular and symbolic actions are needed to wake up the sleep walkers and shake the anaesthetised consciousness," he wrote. more

    Contributors, We Need YOU!

Hello, ---- [snipped] We are looking for people to contribute to our [snipped], we are hoping to offer paid positions in the future but we are currently looking for volunteers. Money is slowly starting to trickle through, but with the help of the community generating articles, spreading news of the site, sharing articles, and word of mouth, we hope to receive more funds through ad-revenue and traffic. If you are interested please [snipped]. We will get back to you immediately. Thank You
  14. I started a blog about software development, and I'd like to hire people to contribute content (kind of like how Neowin hires writers for the news on the front page). How can I go about attracting writers? How much should I pay them? By the way... If you're interested in earning extra money, know about software development, and want to write a few articles, PM me :D
  15. For a while now I've had this idea to start a blog/website to identify false claims in advertising, as well as point out real truth that the ads do not show. I see it as a way to try and help consumers see the reality behind the lies companies put out. A good example is the following: I saw a commercial this weekend for some online pc tune up site, I forget the name, but we'll call it "pcspeedup.com". The commercial begins with some college girl acting frustrated with her computer, saying "I need a new laptop, this one is too slow, I can't get any work done, and it always crashes". Her dad, sitting next to her in a chair, takes a look at the screen and says "It looks like you've got a virus. you don't need a new computer, you need pcspeedup.com". The girl proceeds to ask what that is, and the dad tells her how with "one click, you can make your pc faster, remove garbage, even remove viruses". the ad goes on to tell all the features that the site has, and how it can increase the performance of your laptop blah blah blah. In the end, the girl says "Thanks to pcspeedup.com, my laptop is as fast as new, and look! The virus is even gone" So...It's going to come down to people who don't know much about computers seeing this ad, and thinking some website is going to make their computer brand new, which we all know is not true. Also, we all know that 99.9999995% of the time you can't just look at a computer screen for 2 seconds and know if it has a virus or not. My idea is just to provide an unbiased critique of ads, be it TV, news papers, internet, etc, and try to provide factual information, as well as alternatives (you can remove viruses for free by running acme virus scanner, for example) to consumers who otherwise may not know about these things (like my mom for example). I was planning on initially hosting the site myself, using something like wordpress to design and manage the blog. I'd like to get some peoples opinions on if you think this is an interesting idea, as well as any recommendations on how to get started? As mentioned, I'm planning on using wordpress to initially start the layout/design, I'm going to host it myself at home, until i get some real traffic of course. I was also toying with names such as therealad.com, truthinadvertising.com(taken), something along those lines for the name.

    Happy Valentine

There's been so much hate and self-righteous indignation in tech blog circles lately. Name calling. Ugly accusations. Petty bickering. It's even divided good friends, brother against brother. Can't we all just get along? {C} I want to start with you, Nick Bilton, because it was your post that kicked all this off. Here's the thing: You were right! Path ****ed up, badly. And Silicon Valley is far too chummy. Reporters should be more critical, and less prone to roll over for an apology. We're the ones who showed the belly. Also? Glad to have you in Frisco. (And BTW people here love it when you call it Frisco.) And MG Siegler, your counterpoint was also valid. At least, part of it was, buried somewhere in the thousands of words you threw at it. You're right about tech blogging having too much of a push to publish, publish, publish. The rush to spew half-ass content out hurts everyone. But you know, I do trust Bilton's reporting. He's got bona fides that guys like you and I may never have. You were off-base in your attack on him. Here's what you and Arrington need to understand: everything you say is suspect. You're running a fund now and, fairly or not, that means people will perceive you as biased. Deal with it. Wear that, like your delightful little glasses in which you are quite handsome. Dan Lyons? You made fun of me when you were pretending to be Steve Jobs. But whatever, I have a sense of humor about that. (Of course, you got your facts wrong. I was there for six months, and it was Wired that I was writing for.) And, quite frankly, when people call you out for being a crank, they've had a point more often than not in recent years. But your description of the problems created when journalists have financial stakes in the companies and industries they cover was solid. More to the point, as everyone?even MG?has pointed out, when you put your heart into your writing it's a joy to read. Thanks, man. Let's make out. Seriously. I want to make out with you. Kara Swisher! Goodness gracious. You bring old-school reporting chops to (kinda) new media and it's fantastic. And especially I love it when you are cranky on Twitter. We met in person once, and you were way past rude to me. Way. Past. But you also linked my CES post, and despite your beefs with @blam and Gizmodo, I think you're aces. Let's be friends. I know you already got mo' scoops than Ben & Jerry's on free cone day, but let's hang and I'll buy you some ice cream. There is nothing like a waffle cone to cement a new friendship. I love you, too, Gabe Rivera. Especially because MG told me he'd make sure you put this post on the top of Techmeme. This is, after all, a shameless inside baseball post. Beschizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzza!!!!!!!! And Sarah Lacy? I've been a fan of yours for years and years. Look, you're going to have all kinds of conflict-of-interest accusations lobbed at you because of all that VC money you took at PandoDaily. But that just means you'll have to work harder to show you're fair. I know you can do that. Hell, you seem to live to work hard. You've already had some great stories. Please do more. Also, your kid is pretty darn cute. And then there's Josh Topolsky. Topolsky is out there, every day, proving people wrong who say that nobody can wear a suit as well as Pete Cashmore. And look, man, I may also owe you an apology. I know you didn't really put an iPad 2 in your ass. That wasn't nice of me. I was just hurt because you never invited me to your trailer at CES. Next year? And while we're talking Verge writers. Laura June? You are fantastically funny. I know you are an editor, but you should write more. I suspect you may be spending too much time on Twitter talking to matt buchanan about hot chocolate. Oh man. And don't even get me started about Alexis Madrigal. Sure, you've made The Atlantic a tech destination, and I love making magazines with you. But that mustache you are kicking now? Those waxed ends? I want to build a house on one end and commute to my office on the other. Would that be okay with you? I do not care. I am doing it. Oh, and, Matt Yglesias, I know you aren't really a tech blogger, and look, I know you called me a "Bay Area burrito snob." But it's all good, broseph. And for real. My offer still stands. Let's do this thing. Engadget! Is there anyone still there? I bet you guys are great. I'll check in again soon. Farhad Manjoo: I cannot believe it took us so long to meet in person. Congratulations on the book deal. You deserve it! I do not even have anything backhanded to say to you. You go, girl. And what can I say about good old Walt Mossberg that hasn't already been said? Oh, man. And then there's John Gruber. Gruber and Gizmodo have a long, and often contentious history. You can be a total dick, John Gruber. Total. Dick. And of course everyone just assumes you are a secret Apple employee at this point. But that's also kind of why I love you. You can be a jerk, sure, but you're infuriatingly so often right. Plus you're funny on Twitter, and you link my **** on occasions. I enjoyed meeting your lovely wife at Macworld this year. She's much more charming than you are. Happy Valentine's Day to you both. I have not forgotten about you, people of Wired. There are too many of you to call out by name, because quite honestly I am afraid I would miss somebody and offend him or her. But I miss working with y'all. You do great work. Please invite me over for Start Lounge. I will totally be there and will even bring liquor. Jenna Wortham! Jenny Deluxe! Jenna-***********ing-Wortham! If the management at the New York Times had any damn sense, they'd give you Pogue's column. Update: Megan McCarthy. Thank you for the DM on Twitter! How could I have forgotten about you in the original version of this story that went live ten minutes ago? You are right! BetaBeat is doing awesome stuff, and yes I did forget it because it was new. Although, in fairness, older than the Verge. I think. But yes. Holla! How have I made it this far without mentioning the blogfather? Anil Dash. I mean, Nick Denton. Nick, I love it when you write. I know it's rare these days, but you've got a great voice and remarkable editorial vision. (If terrible taste in music.) I really wish you'd start writing again regularly. And I don't just say that because you pay me. Well. Maybe I do. You'll never know! In short, I love all y'all. And that's not just the bright sunny day, or the ecstasy I took this afternoon talking. We are living in a new golden age of journalism, even if we don't realize it yet. One where individuals and little startups are capable of building up just as many readers and credibility as the most storied names in journalism. It's a meritocracy now. And while we're often all lumped together as tech bloggers, we do different things, and come at them from different angles. Some of us are trying to get scoops, others are trying to do deeper reporting, or explain how things work, or evaluate products, or tell literary stories that try to contextualize the culture. We want to inform, serve, and even entertain. We're aided and handcuffed by the mind-blowing speed at which we have to not only write, but publish. We're making up history as we go, getting facts right and wrong, being vindictive and wonderful, and trying really, really hard to explain this weird new hyper-connected world we that all stomp across. And at the end of the day we're all just humans. And I love you, all of you, who make the Web what it is. Except you, Mike Arrington. I don't love you. You're a boil on the ass of the industry. Oh, what the ****. You too. Even you. Especially you, Mike. TechCrunch has had some great stories over the years, and you've managed to do a lot of great things there, despite yourself. After today maybe I'll go back to loathing you. But for now? Happy Valentine's Day! Gizmodo
