  1. Send nudes, now on Tumblr, as long as it isn't porn by Steve Bennett In a reversal of policies that were originally introduced in 2018, Tumblr has now updated its Community Guidelines once again, this time with a slight modification to the section on Sexually Explicit Material. Previously, any and all nudity and sexual content was barred from being posted on the platform, with the content being censored out if any attempts were made to post the material. However, now the wording goes as follows: Nudity and other kinds of adult material are generally welcome. We’re not here to judge your art, we just ask that you add a Community Label to your mature content so that people can choose to filter it out of their Dashboard if they prefer. You have the option to add a community label when making a new post, reblogging a post, or editing an existing post. Depending on your content, you can label it as generally mature or choose a specific category such as “Sexual Themes” if your post contains sexually suggestive subject matter. Tumblr also goes on to talk about monetization and how the content will interact with this: Blogs which have a focus on mature content may not be eligible for certain Tumblr features, including monetization options. We need to consider the policies of our partners in the payments space, so the rules there are a bit different. Of course, content is moderated automatically on Tumblr, and there may be posts that now comply with these rules but may still be flagged and censored. Users who have fallen foul of the censorship will have to follow the appeals process as detailed on the support page, which also provides guidance on what types of posts would fall foul of the new rules, primarily, posting links to adult sites still remains prohibited.
  2. Tumblr now allows users to browse ad-free for $4.99 a month by Karthik Mudaliar Tumblr is now allowing users to sign up for a subscription if they don't like to see ads for a price of $4.99 a month or a discounted price of $39.99 if opted for a year. This makes the website similar to how it was at its peak probably a decade ago. After Yahoo bought Tumblr in 2013 and got acquired by Verizon, but was ultimately sold off to Automattic Inc, while banning porn to lose a massive chunk of its audience - the company eventually lost its essence. David Karp, who is the founder of Tumblr, always opposed advertising. But the company needed a constant stream of revenue to survive and the ad-free subscription option is perhaps one of the first steps to do that. Tumblr also recently announced a new monetization tool called "Tip Jar" that would allow creators to earn by posting on the platform. Creators will be able to keep all the money they get from their fans via the Tip Jar. Along with Tip Jar, the company had also introduced a Post+ feature starting at $3.99 a month with additional premium tiers at $5.99 and $9.99 a month which would allow creators to charge viewers for exclusive content. If interested, users can go to their Account Settings option on their desktop and click on "Go Ad-Free" from where they can choose if they want to pay monthly or yearly. Tumblr says that the ad-free subscription is opt-in, and they won't make you buy it if you don't want to.
  3. Tumblr Tip Jar is the second monetization tool for content creators after Post+ subscription by Alap Naik Desai Tumblr is adding yet another content monetization tool. The Tumblr Tip Jar is a way to appreciate content creators with small monetary rewards. Content creators will be able to keep all the amount they earn through this method. Just like the YouTube “Thanks” feature, the Tumblr Tip Jar allows viewers and subscribers to tip their favorite creators on the platform. The process involves clicking or tapping on the “Tip” button with a dollar sign on any post. Users can then choose the amount they want to give through their preferred payment channels. The Tumblr Tip Jar feature is limiting the reward amount to $100. Users can choose to send the money anonymously or add a message. Those choosing to send money can also see who else has sent tips on the same post. The new feature is currently available to users in the U.S., but the platform has indicated that more regions will be included soon. The most attractive aspect of Tumblr Tip Jar is that Tumblr will not take any commission from the payments. Payments will go through Stripe, and credit card fees will apply. Tumblr Tip Jar is the second monetization tool the platform has introduced in recent times. About eight months ago, Tumblr launched “Post+”. It is a subscription service that allows content creators to charge users for some exclusive content. Post+ starts at $3.99 per month, with additional premium tiers at $5.99 and $9.99 per month. Needless to add, Post+ is a recurring payment plan. The Tumblr Tip Jar, on the other hand, can help content creators earn tips for their publicly available posts. Moreover, those opting to offer monetary rewards can vary the amount as per their desire. Source: Mashable

  5. Automattic buys Tumblr from Verizon for reportedly less than $20 million by Rich Woods Today, Verizon announced that it's selling off Tumblr to Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com. Verizon didn't disclose the terms of the deal, but according to Axios, Automattic picked it up for "well below" $20 million. "Tumblr is one of the Web’s most iconic brands," said Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg. "It is an essential venue to share new ideas, cultures and experiences, helping millions create and build communities around their shared interests. We are excited to add it to our lineup, which already includes WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, Simplenote, Longreads, and more." Verizon purchased Yahoo and all of its assets back in 2017 for under $5 billion, and Yahoo had purchased Tumblr in 2013 for $1.1 billion. Clearly, Tumblr's value has steeply declined. Reports of Verizon wanting to offload the blogging service started back in May, with PornHub being the company showing interest since Tumblr had become known for its adult content. PornHub had said at the time that it would want to restore all of that NSFW content. Obviously, with the purchase by Automattic, that won't be happening.
  6. Verizon is reportedly putting Tumblr up for sale [Update] by Jay Bonggolto Verizon has reportedly been exploring deals to sell Tumblr, the blogging platform it took over as part of its $4.83 billion Yahoo acquisition. Yahoo bought Tumblr in early 2013 for $1.1 billion, but it remains unclear what price the wireless carrier is selling the micro-blogging site for. According to a new report by The Wall Street Journal, which cites sources privy to Verizon's plan, the sale is part of its efforts to turn around the struggling revenues from its media properties under the Oath umbrella. Verizon formed Oath in 2017 and merged Yahoo into the group along with its other media property, AOL. However, the merger did not result in any major benefit for Verizon, and it wrote down Oath's value by $4.6 billion late last year, according to Business Insider. The search for buyers is still ongoing per the report, but no definitive deal is expected anytime soon. Tumblr's visitors took a nosedive since late last year after it banned adult content from the platform. According to figures from database company Statista, Tumblr's combined desktop and mobile visits fell from 521 million in December 2018 to 437 million in January of this year. Update: In a statement to BuzzFeed News, Pornhub Vice President Corey Price said the porn-streaming site is interested in buying Tumblr and wants to restore its NSFW content if it strikes a deal with Verizon. 7. Child pornography is the reason why Tumblr vanished from Apple's App Store by Jay Bonggolto Late last week, reports about the disappearance of Tumblr's iOS app from Apple's App Store made the rounds on the internet. The reason was initially unclear as both Apple and Tumblr remained mum on the issue at the time, but a statement from the micro-blogging site indicates that its app was booted from the App Store after it was found to be serving child pornography. According to CNET's Download.com, which first learned of the reason behind the issue from independent sources, the pornographic material in question slipped past Tumblr's standard filters. The news comes after the social networking site announced changes to its community guidelines in August as part of efforts to tackle inappropriate content including sexual harassment, hate speech, and violence. Tumblr says that it never tolerates sexual content involving children on its platform, adding that it's working with industry partners such as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to keep track of content on its site. The company adds: "Every image uploaded to Tumblr is scanned against an industry database of known child sexual abuse material, and images that are detected never reach the platform. A routine audit discovered content on our platform that had not yet been included in the industry database. We immediately removed this content. Content safeguards are a challenging aspect of operating scaled platforms. We're continuously assessing further steps we can take to improve and there is no higher priority for our team." It remains unclear when the app will return to the App Store, but Tumblr states that it's working on the issue, as evidenced by the daily updates on its Help Center since the problem occurred on November 16. Nevertheless, the app has remained available to download from the Google Play Store throughout the circumstances. Source: Download.com
  8. Tumblr targets hate speech, violence and sexual harassment with new community guidelines by João Carrasqueira Hate speech and other kinds of hateful conduct have become a bigger and bigger part of everyday life on the internet, and we've seen many different social platforms coming up with ways to tackle the issue. Now, Tumblr is taking steps of its own to combat the presence of such content on its platform. Unlike the complex studies and algorithms done by companies such as Twitter, Tumblr is simply making some tweaks to its community guidelines to further emphasize which kind of content isn't allowed on the platform. The changes target three categories: hate speech, violent content, and sexual harassment. Regarding hate speech, the social network simply removed one line, which may have created some doubt as to how hateful one comment can be before warranting a report. The sentence suggested that users only report content which was "especially heinous", but the company is taking a firmer stance now: Don’t encourage violence or hatred. Don’t post content for the purpose of promoting or inciting the hatred of, or dehumanizing, individuals or groups based on race, ethnic or national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, age, veteran status, sexual orientation, disability or disease. If you encounter content that violates our hate speech policies, please report it. Keep in mind that a post might be mean, tasteless, or offensive without necessarily encouraging violence or hatred. In cases like that, you can always block the person who made the post—or, if you’re up for it, you can express your concerns to them directly, or use Tumblr to speak up, challenge ideas, raise awareness or generate discussion and debate. In the wake of the mass shooting that took place at the Madden Tournament in Jacksonville over the weekend, Tumblr is also making changes to how violent content can be posted on the platform. The guidelines now discourage speech that includes threats of violence in any form, gore, mutilation, or any other kind of torture. It also forbids content that incites or glorifies violence or those who cause it. Lastly, acknowledging the many ways that can be used to humiliate and harass others - such as deepfake images - Tumblr is making it clearer that sexual harassment is not allowed on the platform. A simple, but straightforward, sentence - which is highlighted in bold below - was added to the guidelines: Don’t engage in targeted abuse or harassment. Don’t engage in the unwanted sexualization or sexual harassment of others. These seem like relatively small changes in wording, but it should make it clearer which content should be reported to moderators - the number of which is also increasing, according to the announcement. The new guidelines take effect starting on September 10. Source: Tumblr via The Verge
  9. Rules: 1.- No sites with obscene or macabre imagery. 2.- No sites with illegal software. 3.- If posting a blog or tumblr, please, include a line telling us what is about. 4.- Have fun.
  10. You won't be able to access Tumblr, Yahoo services from AT&T email addresses from June 30 by Gurkaran Singh Verizon's purchase of Yahoo has been a hot topic for the tech industry ever since its announcement, which was followed by months of NSA-related drama that revealed data breaches of up to 500 million user accounts. The sagaa had a happy ending though, with Verizon saving $450 million on the deal. Now, after months of lull, a new move that stops users from accessing Yahoo's web services with their AT&T email addresses potentially veered into the net neutrality territory. Thankfully, that's not the case, as this is mostly about winding down the corporate deals prior to the acquisition. The arrangement that affects users of popular micro-blogging site, Tumblr as well as other Yahoo services have until June 30 to comply with the change. AT&T has notified its customers with the following statement: "Yahoo websites are no longer linked to from att.net. As of June 30, 2017, you won't be able to login to most of Yahoo websites using your AT&T email address" Tumblr, too, posted a notice that advised its users to switch their email addresses to access their services: "Starting on June 30, 2017, att.net customers will no longer be able to log in to their Yahoo and Tumblr accounts through email addresses with the following domains: att.net, ameritech.net, bellsouth.net, flash.net, nvbell.net, pacbell.net, prodigy.net, sbcglobal.net, snet.net, swbell.net, and wans.net." So, if you're a user affected by this change, make sure to change your email address from the Yahoo one before June 30. Post acquisition, Yahoo will be merged with Verizon's other possession, AOL, to form Oath. Sources: TechCrunch
  11. Tumblr claimed that a data breach affected 'a set' of users, turns out to be over 60m by Jack Wilkinson Screenshot of the marketplace listing for Tumblr data Tumblr was the subject of a data breach back in 2013, before being acquired by Yahoo. The company only discovered the breach on May 12. At the time, the microblogging service claimed that only "a set" of users were affected; however, an analysis of the data shows this not to be accurate. The data that was leaked included 65,469,298 emails and passwords. The passwords were hashed and salted, but Tumblr did not state the algorithm used in the process, although the hacker who is circulating the data, known as Peace, claims it used the SHA-1 algorithm, which is compromised and insecure. The same process was used in the recent MySpace breach, too. However, in this case, the passwords are salted, making it much harder to crack, though not necessarily impossible. Troy Hunt, founder of the 'Have I Been Pwned?' breach tracking service, says that at least half of the passwords could be cracked. His website now lists Tumblr as the third largest breach, after both LinkedIn and Adobe, adding to the ever-growing list of data leaks. Tumblr should have notified all users they believed to have been affected, but just in case, you can check to see if you have been involved in this breach by entering your email address on the 'Have I been Pwned?' website, where you can also sign-up for email notifications for future breaches. You can also stay alert to non-sensitive breaches on your Windows 10 device using the newly-released 'Hacked?' app, which will send you a notification within 12 hours if you are affected by a breach. 12. Yahoo will axe 15% of jobs by year's end by Paul Hill Yahoo has announced what it calls an "aggressive strategic plan" which will see the company narrow its focus to areas it perceives itself to be strong in. The company hopes this will "fuel growth, drive and increase revenue", unfortunately for workers at Yahoo, the plan will also see current jobs being cut by 15%. With her new plan, Marissa Mayer - CEO of Yahoo - wants to focus on Search, Mail and Tumblr as well as News, Sports, Finance and Lifestyle in 'growth markets' such as the US, Canada, UK, Germany, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. By focusing on these things, the company believes in can innovate in these areas more rapidly, making them more attractive to users. Regarding advertising, the company will 'be defined' by its two core offerings: Gemini and BrightRoll. The new plan will see Yahoo's search business and Tumblr platform, become further oriented towards mobile users. By investing in 'forward-leaning mobile search', Yahoo hopes to redefine search on mobile devices, which they say will drive sustainable long-term growth. As for Yahoo Mail, the focus is on improving speed and stability, as well as making it easier for users to share, search and connect through the platform. Due to the re-focusing on core business products, Yahoo will stop providing some services and products such as 'Games' and 'Smart TV'. Unfortunately, the changes will see the company shed 15% of its workforce. The company will exit five offices in Dubai, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Madrid and Milan. Most of the changes outlined are planned to occur during Q1, but will have definitely been made by the end of the year. Once the latest round of cuts have been made, Yahoo will have seen a 42% reduction in its workforce since 2012. The savings from the cuts are expected to be around $400 million annually in the short term. The company hopes that the plan will see modest and accelerating growth in 2017 and 2018. 13. Yahoo reportedly eyeing Tumblr for possible $1 billion acquisition Is Yahoo trying to acquire Tumblr? Earlier today, All Things D reported that the two companies were in "serious" talks about some kind of deal, and now Adweek is sayingthat Yahoo is looking to do a straight-up acquisition. The deal could reach as high as $1 billion, say Adweek?s sources, putting it in the same league as Facebook?s acquisition of Instagram last year. Yahoo has been working to capture younger users ? the same 18- to 24-year-olds that make up Tumblr?s core user base. Yahoo CFO Ken Goldman recently noted that one of the company?s challenges has been its aging demographic, writes All Things D. Since taking control of Yahoo, CEO Marissa Mayer has pursued a string of acquisitions, including Summly, Astrid, Jybe, and others. In addition to the failed Dailymotion acquisition, the company has also been rumored to be looking at Hulu, although Mayer has previously said that the company is shopping for smaller targets valued in the $100 million range. But if younger users are what Yahoo is after, it?s hard to picture a better target than Tumblr. Adweek notes that the deal could also be just what the microblogging service is looking for, pointing to investors? hopes for a big cashout, and Yahoo?s huge ad sales team, which could help Tumblr scale up revenues. 14. Hello gang, A friend asked for a simple app to do bulk uploading to Tumbr. I could not find a Windows app that did this and so I started looking at the API and it stated that the Source value will only accept a URL, not a local file. I thought about posting it to my site and then passing the url to the app, but that seems an excessive way to achieve this process. Any thoughts?
