  7. US PC shipment declines slowed in the second quarter by Paul Hill The analyst firm Canalys has reported that US PC shipments declined more slowly during the second quarter compared to the same period the year before. The category, which includes desktops, notebooks, and workstations, declined 6% year-over-year with 18.2 million units. The company said that notebooks, which includes mobile workstations, declined 4% to 15.2 million shipments. A steeper decline was avoided by the return of Chromebook demand in the education sector. Things were not as good for desktops which saw a steeper decline with shipments falling by 12% year-over-year to 3.0 million units. Canalys also noted that the US tablet market saw a 5% decline during Q2 to 10.3 million units. Commenting on the figures, Ishan Dutt, Principal Analyst at Canalys, said: ‘Despite undergoing another year-on-year decline, the US PC market showed promising signs of improvement in the second quarter. With the buildup of channel inventories now largely cleared, pockets of demand strength are now being reflected in vendors’ sell-in shipment performance. A key area that helped drive volumes was the return of demand from education institutions, backed by the latest wave of federal funding, ahead of a licensing cost increase for ChromeOS. This helped propel Chromebook shipments to 4.7 million units, the highest level since peak deployments during the first half of 2021.’ According to the data, PC shipments in the commercial sector declined just 4% year-over-year. Meanwhile, there was a decline of 10% in the consumer sector. The analyst said that we probably won’t see a recovery in the consumer market until the fourth quarter when products are discounted for the holidays. In terms of brands, nobody at all will be surprised to hear that the company with the most growth in PC shipments was Apple. It saw growth year-over-year of 32.6% thanks to the cultish following it has and higher spending ability of many of its customers. Acer was hardest hit seeing its growth decline by 20.3%. In Q2 2022, it held 14.6% of the market share but in Q2 2023 it had declined to 11.9%. The company with the highest market share was HP at 26.5%, it also saw a modest annual growth of 6.0%. Among tablets, Apple was the only company to record growth. It extended its market share from 41.3% in Q2 2022 to 52.2% in Q2 2023 with 20.1% annual growth. Source: Canalys
  8. Global PC market decline slows, says Canalys by Paul Hill Canalys has announced that the sharp decline in the worldwide PC market shipments seems to be levelling off a bit. It said that during the second quarter, total shipments of desktops and notebooks were down 11.5% year-over-year to 62.1 million units. In the first quarter of this year and the fourth quarter of last year, shipments had been declining by over 30%, so a drop to 12% will be positive news for those waiting for things to pickup. While it may be a bit optimistic on the part of Canalys, it believes the bottoming out of the decline could be “a sign that the market is on track for accelerated recovery in the second half of this year.” “The PC market is showing early signs of a bounce back following a difficult period,” said Ishan Dutt, Principal Analyst at Canalys. “An annual shipment decline was expected in the second quarter of 2023, but there are indications that many of the issues that have affected the sector are beginning to abate.” “While the global macroeconomic situation remains difficult, key industry players have been pointing to the fact that end-user activation rates have been tracking stronger than sell-in shipments. As conditions improve, we expect businesses to reallocate dormant spending back toward IT upgrades. In Q2 2023, the return of public sector funding helped fuel strong back-to-school demand for PCs.” The top PC OEMs according to Canalys, and their respective market shares as of Q2 2023, were Lenovo (22.9%), HP (21.6%), Dell (16.6%), Apple (11.0%) and Acer (6.4%) - Others (21.4%) accounted for the rest of the market. Of these top five, Apple saw the best annual growth at 50.9% while Dell suffered the most with a decline of 21.9%. According to Canalys, Apple’s strong performance was a result of the launch of its new 15-inch MacBook Air and a favourable comparison quarter due to the supply chain disruption it faced the year before.

  24. Canalys: Global PC market saw 25% YoY growth in 4Q20 by Paul Hill The analyst firm Canalys has reported that the global PC market saw 25% year-over-year growth in the fourth quarter of 2020. The firm classifies the PC market as desktops, notebooks (including Chromebooks) and workstations but excludes tablets which are sometimes used by some in place of a full-blown PC. Total PC shipments in 2020 grew by 11% reaching 297 million units. The full-year growth in the PC market is the highest that’s been seen since 2020 and the number of units shipped is the highest seen since 2014. The growth in 2020 was driven by laptops and mobile workstations; they saw a growth rate of 44% compared to 2019. Desktops, on the other hand, were less successful with shipments falling 20% compared to 2019; there were 61.9 million shipments in this segment of the market in 2020. In the fourth quarter, the biggest PC vendor was Lenovo which shipped 23.1 million units, in second place was HP which shipped 19.1 million units. Dell came in third place shipping more than 15 million units for the first time ever, Apple was in fourth place shipping 7.1 million units and Acer came fifth with 6.1 million units shipped. Other companies shipped a combined 18.9 million units in the fourth quarter. According to Canalys Research Director Rushabh Doshi, PCs have been at the centre of the digital transformation that the world has gone through in the past year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Doshi said that going forward it’s going to be “extremely difficult” to write off PCs and that it’s likely that they’re here to stay.
