  1. Hello, This is the definitive Best Backup Software of 2024 official thread. It covers both free and commercial backup software, as well as those built into or bundled with operating systems. Use this as a starting point for researching back-up software. The previous year's thread can be found here. If your choice of a back-up solution is not listed, please choose the appropriate Other option(s) and specify in the comments. The poll is multiple choice, so if you use more than one solution, you can select all of those. Be sure to mention which ones you use in the comments. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
  2. Windows 11/10 get unofficial backup app if you don't like Microsoft's, works offline too by Sayan Sen Towards the middle of the year in May, Microsoft released a Backup app for testing on a Windows 11 Dev Insider channel. The company later expanded its functionality in a future build such that it was able to support more scenarios. Although it was initially planned for as a Windows 11 feature, Microsoft released it to Windows 10 as well in August. This was not the first or the last time the tech giant expanded a Windows 11 feature to Windows 10 as something similar happened to Copilot, as well as a Group Policy for deploying optional updates. While the backup app on Windows 10 has generally been a welcome addition, it did cause some inconvenience to IT and sysadmins when Microsoft pushed it onto enterprise and managed systems. The tech giant later acknowledged the inconvenience and promised a future Windows update that altered this behavior. Still, if you don't like the official Windows backup app, there is a new third-party option available in preview. Dubbed "Appcopier," this utility allows the local/offline backing up and restoring Windows 11 preferences and settings; and it could work with Windows 10 too, although the developer does not guarantee that. However, the app is said to be fairly lightweight in the way it works and users are told to expect super-fast backups, at least initially. You can see the UI of Appcopier in the image above. The dev says: It allows you to back up and restore your most important Windows 11 preferences and settings offline and locally. The app mimics the new backup app of Windows 11 - which is part of the Windows 11 2023 Update (23H2) - but without the obligation of the cloud. How does Appcopier works? Quite simple! Only registry entries and/or associated folders and files of the respective area are exported. This process is very quick and lightweight, akin to the weight of a fly. So don't be surprised if the first backups fly through in the nanosecond range. You can try the app by downloading it from GitHub, though keep in mind that this is an unofficial, third-party software.
  3. Samsung brings Temporary Cloud Backup to store your files for free by Aditya Tiwari Samsung is starting the global rollout of a feature called Temporary Cloud Backup. As the name suggests, the feature can back up your apps and data to Samsung Cloud for a limited period of time without any cost. It can be helpful when you need to reset your device or send it for repair but you don't have an active cloud storage service. The Korean giant said in a blog post that Temporary Cloud Backup is designed to offer comfort and reassurance in situations "where Samsung Galaxy users may experience anxiety about losing their data, including photos, videos and private files." It goes without saying that you need to have a Samsung account to use Temporary Cloud Backup; the feature is only compatible with Galaxy smartphones and tablets running One UI 6. You also need to ensure that your device is running Samsung Cloud v5.3.0.32 and Smart Switch v3.7.40.4 or later. The feature can upload all your data to the cloud via WiFi, where it stays for 30 days. Samsung will delete the backed-up data after 30 days, but it will start sending reminders about a week before the deletion date. For reference, Apple also offers a similar functionality when users buy a new iPhone or iPad. They can create a temporary backup on iCloud which expires after 21 days. Samsung hasn't put any upper limit on how much data you can upload using the Temporary Cloud Backup feature. However, it has capped individual file sizes at 100GB, and you can only back up one device at a time. The backup will not work if the device is not connected to WiFi or the battery level is less than 30%. When compared to regular Samsung Cloud backup, temporary cloud backup supports additional data types, including Samsung and third-party apps, photos, videos, audio, documents, and files. It's worth noting the feature only works for your device and can't backup data stored on an SD card. Depending on your device and region, you can access and restore your backup data by going to Settings > General Management > Reset > Temporary Cloud Backup. You can also access it by going to Settings > Battery and Device Care > Maintenance Mode > Temporary Cloud Backup. You can also restore directly from the temporary cloud backup while setting up a new Samsung device. Samsung said that Temporary Cloud Backup files will be independent of existing Samsung Cloud backup files, and the backup data will not overlap.

    Bvckup 2 Release 82.9

Bvckup 2 Release 82.9 by Razvan Serea Bvckup 2 is a mirroring data backup software notable for its use of delta copying, speed of operation, small resource footprint and a "beautifully functional" user interface. The software replicates files from one location to another in their original format and purposefully does not include options for compressing or encrypting them. It does however include a comprehensive list of supporting features including periodic and real-time backup scheduling, removable device tracking and shadow copying support. Ideal for making local backups, backups going to external and removable drives as well as to NAS devices. Bvckup 2 features: Real-time, scheduled and manual backups Very fast, delta file copying Excellent user interface Backup of locked files with shadow copying Removable device tracking Move/rename detection Full 64-bit support Run-as-a-service mode Symlink and junction support Ownership, group and DACL copying Fully asynchronous I/O Multi-core processing where required Optimized throughout for no run-time bloat Software update notifications Bvckup 2 Release 82.9 changelog: Patched 3 UI issues in the Advanced section of backup settings - certain fields were editable, but it wasn't possible to actually save the changes. Most notably this included the "Errors and retries" section values. Patched scanning thread count sometimes being capped at 1 - if you've noticed your scans getting longer, this might've been the cause. Patched an issue when the config folder runs out of disk space - the condition wasn't caught early enough and caused some unnecessary noise in the logs. Patched an issue with rapid-fire "remove device ?" events - this is a rare issue that was triggered when the program received a string of removal queries _for the same device_ in a rapid succession. In theory this should not be happening, but in practice it does. The program wasn't prepared for that and panicked. Resolved now. Revised scanning logic to accommodate various edge cases. One change is the handling of malformed . and .. entries in the folder content list. These entries are always present, but some random storage provider reported them with a NUL symbol appended. Being a pedant that it is, the scanning module saw these .\0 and ..\0 entries, treated them as regular items and attempted to scan them, leading to errors. It knows better now. Another change is that running into a files or folders scheduled for deletion (error code 0xC0000056) will no longer abort the scan. Similarly, running into subfolders that got deleted _after_ being picked up for the scan (error code 0xC000003A) will also no longer abort the scan. Finally, error code 0xC00000D0 ("Request not accepted") is now a retryable error as is stands for "No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because the computer has already accepted the maximum number of connections." Bvckup 2 Release 82.8

Bvckup 2 Release 82.8 by Razvan Serea Bvckup 2 is a mirroring data backup software notable for its use of delta copying, speed of operation, small resource footprint and a "beautifully functional" user interface. Bvckup 2 features: Real-time, scheduled and manual backups Very fast, delta file copying Excellent user interface Backup of locked files with shadow copying Removable device tracking Move/rename detection Full 64-bit support Run-as-a-service mode Symlink and junction support Ownership, group and DACL copying Fully asynchronous I/O Multi-core processing where required Optimized throughout for no run-time bloat Software update notifications Bvckup 2 Release 82.8 changelog: Relaxed handling of secondary errors when creating folders. Previously, if a job was set to copy file/folder security attributes and the program would failed to do that for a freshly created folder, it would fail the step and cause all dependent backup steps to be skipped over. While technically correct, a more desirable behavior would normally be to copy files still even if the sec info on the backup folder cannot be set. So that's the change in this release => sec info and ADS copying errors are now considered secondary errors and will not auto-fail dependent backup actions. Patched several smaller issues related to error handling, all of them are for very rare edge cases. 11. Don't be an April Fool, backup your files on World Backup Day by Steven Parker Have you given any thought as to what would happen if you lost your phone? What if your laptop was infected with ransomware? Have you analyzed and figured out what data is important and, more importantly, how to keep it protected? It's the goal of World Backup Day, "celebrated" on March 31st every year, to bring attention to the idea that many people don't think about their data until it's too late. According to the World Backup Day website, just under a fifth of people have never backed up their data, despite Cloud storage being a regular thing in comparison to five years ago. A staggering 113 phones are lost or stolen every 60 seconds. While many people have online backup services from Microsoft, Apple, and Google that are mostly free and automatically copy data from their phone, a large number of people don't bother to set it up, don't think about what data to have copied, or simply don't understand the capabilities. In addition, there are often limits to the amount of data that can be stored, and photos are frequently reduced in quality in order to save space. We're sure most of our readers have a good handle on what data they need to backup and have reliable solutions in place. However, it's probably a good idea to take the day to talk to your less technical friends about the potential issues and some solutions, whether it be a NAS device from companies like Synology and QNAP, cloud solutions, or offsite backups. Some solutions, such as local NAS devices, even allow you to set up snapshots so that if ransomware hits your network, you can still go back in time to save your data. Even if you do have backups, make sure you test them on a regular basis (perhaps every World Backup Day!). As a smart sysadmin once told me, "Nobody cares about backups. Everyone cares about restores." Poll What type of person are you? I have a full backup solution for my data I do not have a full backup solution for my data YOLO! Submit Vote Amazon will be discounting storage drives today, so it might be a great idea to consider extending or managing your backup hardware. Patched a pair of UI issues with super tall windows that caused the bottom (log) panel to cover the entire window pushing the list of backup jobs out of the view. Revised symlink traversal logic. Revised scope of the "verify touched files" option. This option will now apply only if the _contents_ of a file were copied or updated and will no longer apply if only file's meta (attributes, timestamps, etc.) were updated. Humanized a handful of new Windows error codes. That is, there are now human-readable explanations for certain common failure codes to accompany their numerical values. 14. 5 Simple cybersecurity tips you can practice in 2023 by Justin Luna During the third quarter of 2022, global cyberattacks increased by 28% compared to the same period in 2021, according to Check Point Research. A lot of companies also fell victim to ransomware attacks and suffered data breaches, while many individuals inadvertently shared sensitive information to threat actors through phishing scams. And as we enter a new year, we can expect cybercriminals to develop new and more sophisticated ways to steal sensitive information from unsuspecting victims. Thankfully, there are many things you can do to stay safe online this 2023. Let's take a look at some of them. 1. Use strong and unique passwords via Trend Micro It's important to use strong passwords to secure your online accounts. By doing so, you can reduce the risk of falling victim to brute force attacks, or a trial-and-error method used by cybercriminals wherein they use commonly used passwords to guess an account owner's login credentials. One way to create strong passwords is to use passphrases, or strings of unrelated words that you use as a password. According to Useapassphrase.com, it will take about 2,563,379,452,772,621 centuries for a threat actor to guess the passphrase "mushiness uncut washcloth lividly." And because passphrases are composed of words, they are easier to remember compared to typical passwords that contain random numbers, letters, and symbols. Finally, make sure to use a unique password for all of your accounts. This way, even if one of your accounts gets compromised, threat actors won't be able to access your other accounts. If you find it difficult to keep track of all your passwords, you can use password managers like Dashlane and 1Password. Password managers can generate and store your passwords in an encrypted vault that can only be accessed using a master password. Just make sure to create a secure master password so you can avoid the risk of having your account hacked. 2. Use multifactor authentication (MFA) Passwords can only go so far when protecting your online accounts. MFA improves your accounts' security by requiring you to enter two or more factors to verify your identity when you log in to your account. These authentication factors could be a one-time PIN (OTP), facial or fingerprint scan, or physical key. By enabling MFA, even if a cybercriminal gets a hold of a your username and password, they won’t be able to infiltrate your account if they can't provide the other authentication factors. As much as possible, however, avoid using SMS-based authentication, as it is not a secure authentication method. For instance, cybercriminals can engage in SIM swapping, where they impersonate you and tell your mobile carrier that your SIM card has been damaged. They will then ask the carrier to transfer your mobile number to a new SIM card. This will grant them access to OTPs and password reset links sent via text messages. Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey fell victim to such an attack back in 2019, which resulted in his Twitter account getting hacked. 3. Install security updates as soon as possible Device and operating system (OS) updates don't just introduce new features. They also often provide important security patches that can prevent cybercriminals from exploiting vulnerabilities to access your sensitive information. As such, make sure to install security updates for your OS as soon as you can. 4. Protect yourself from phishing scams Phishing is a type of cyberattack wherein threat actors pose as a reputable entity like a bank or a trusted friend and send legitimate-looking emails to trick users into divulging personal information, such as names, email addresses, passwords, and credit card data. Phishing is one of the most common cyberattacks today. Cybercriminals have also improved their tactics, as they are now leveraging text messages and voice calls to victimize people. To protect yourself from phishing, be careful when clicking on any links, as threat actors can pass off a URL like "pay-pal-login[.]com" as a legitimate URL. Don't download any attachments from unsolicited emails as well, and never give out personal information to anyone on the internet. Legitimate organizations will never ask for such information via email, text message, voice call, or social media. 5. Back up your data Many years ago, if you get infected with ransomware, you can easily recover from it by restoring from a local backup. However, threat actors have upped their game and made it difficult for victims to recover their data using this method. This is why it's important to store your backups in a separate location, such as an external hard drive or flash drive. You can also use a cloud storage system like OneDrive or Google Drive, which allows you to store your data online. Externally backed up files will not be affected even if your system gets encrypted by ransomware. Do you have any cybersecurity tips to share yourself? Let us know in the comments section below.
  15. Xiaomi integrates Google Photos backups into its own Gallery app by Paul Hill In an effort to make MIUI more integrated with Google’s ecosystem, Xiaomi has announced that photo and video backups through Google Photos will now be built-in to the MIUI Gallery app too. Additionally, the company said that Xiaomi Cloud users will be able to move their backed up photos and videos over to Google Photos, so they can keep their collections in one location. Xiaomi will begin rolling out this functionality on existing devices starting in Singapore on October 24. Other markets will get the update too, but it’s not clear when or which markets will get the functionality – hopefully, it will be a global rollout. Google gives you 15 GB of storage, but you can always expand this with Google One subscriptions. For those migrating from Xiaomi Cloud to Google Photos, there will be introductory membership trials of Google One available. Providing comment, Quanxin Wang, General Manager of Product & Technology at Xiaomi International, said: “Xiaomi is continuously searching for ways to improve our software product experience. Google Photos and Xiaomi share similar values in aiming to provide a reliable platform for users and their day-to-day moments captured on their smartphones. Our cooperation with Google Photos will offer users an easy way to ensure their data is stored securely, while being able to easily access them across different devices as required.” For those that were wondering, this isn’t some hackish implementation done by Xiaomi alone. Google said that it has been excited to be able to work with Xiaomi to make the experience better for the Chinese company’s customers.

  17. Meta expands Messenger's end-to-end encryption, says its unrelated to Nebraska abortion case by Fiza Ali Meta has announced that it is testing a number of encryption-related features on Messenger and Instagram to enhance user experience. The social giant says it will continue offering updates as it moves toward a "global rollout of default end-to-end encryption for personal messages and calls in 2023." According to news source WIRED, Meta spokesperson, Alex Dziedzan denied that the latest move is related to a high-profile Nebraska abortion case, saying: This is not a response to any law enforcement requests. We've had this date in the diary for months, but the short notice is because Messenger product teams have been finalizing the tests that are going live. These tests will start [Thursday]. We want people to hear about these tests from us before they see changes in the app.” The tech giant will begin testing its latest secure storage feature for backups of end-to-end encrypted chats on Messenger this week on Android, and iOS. With Secure Storage, Meta won't have access to your messages unless you report them. You will also be able to back up your end-to-end Messenger conversations in case you lose your device or want to restore your message history on a new, supported device. If you wish to access your backups, Messenger will offer two end-to-end encrypted options including generating a code or creating a PIN. Meta will also allow you to restore your Messenger conversations via third-party cloud services, but its end-to-end encryption won't protect it. Secure Storage isn't yet available on Messenger for desktop or chats that aren't end-to-end encrypted. Meta is also planning on launching more tests and updates on its end-to-end encrypted chats including deleted messages syncing across other devices and the option to unsend messages, and reply to Facebook Stories. Meta will also start testing default end-to-end encrypted chats between some users. This suggests that users will no longer have to opt in to the feature. Moreover, Meta is also bringing its new security feature, Code Verify, an open-source web browser extension available on Chrome, FireFox, and Microsoft Edge, that automatically verifies the authenticity of the code when using Messenger. While Meta retains the disappearing messages feature on Messenger, it is getting rid of vanish mode. However, Instagram will continue to have vanish mode in which the chats aren't end-to-end encrypted. Furthermore, after making end-to-end encryption of Messenger chats available for everyone, the tech giant is now testing expanded chat features on Instagram as well, including opt-in end-to-end encrypted messages and calls; this expanded test will also be available to everyone.
  18. Upgrade path to Linux Mint 21 opens up with graphical upgrade tool by Paul Hill The Linux Mint team has announced the opening up of upgrades from Linux Mint 20.3 to Linux Mint 21. It’s the first time that Linux Mint users will be able to jump between major versions using a graphical interface. Despite the upgrade process being made simpler, users are still advised to take their time with it and prepare system snapshots. While the upgrade is done with a graphical tool, the Linux Mint team, annoyingly, is still providing command line instructions to install the graphical upgrade tool. While it may be available through the Software Manager, the official instructions ask you to run the following commands: apt update apt install mintupgrade sudo mintupgrade After you have type each of these commands in separately and allowed them to execute, you should have the upgrade tool open and ready to go. The upgrade could take several hours depending on your computer and internet speed, but when it’s done you should use the following commands to remove the tool: apt remove mintupgrade sudo reboot Before performing any of the instructions above, read over the official documentation and make a backup with Timeshift or your preferred backup tool. If anything goes wrong during the upgrade, you’ll be able to restore from the backup. While it’s very nice to see the Linux Mint team making major upgrades easy to do, it’d be better if the official documentation gave users instructions that didn’t require using the command line. Hopefully, the tool is available through the software manager for those who are uncomfortable using the command line. For those who don’t mind reinstalling software, making a backup of your files and performing a clean installation is also an option. Using this method is less likely to leave you with legacy items from the previous version.

  21. Today is World Backup day, and a reminder to backup and better protect your data by Steven Parker Today is World Backup Day, we emphasize it on a yearly basis to remind our readers about the importance of backing up your data! If you're new here, or just happen to avoid reading Neowin every March 31st, World Backup Day is "a day for people to learn about the increasing role of data in our lives and the importance of regular backups." Think about it. How much personal data do you have on your phone? There's undoubtedly a bunch of photos and videos. How about your computer? Do you have any important tax documents? Excel spreadsheets and Word documents? Maybe you even have a Plex server filled with personal music and television shows? Now imagine your phone is on your home network and gets infected with Ransomware. It encrypts everything on the device and then worms its way to everything it sees on your network, while also deleting all of your cloud storage. Your photos, videos, documents, and music are all encrypted. What would you do? With a backup, it's important to have multiple copies of your data. At the very least, you want two copies of the data, but ideally you want at least three, with one copy stored in a separate building from where you live to protect against fire and natural disasters. You should also think about having an offline copy so that if you are hit with ransomware, it won't be able to destroy the offline copy. Fortunately, it appears the message is getting across, last year it was estimated that 30% of people have never backed up their computer before, this year that estimate has dropped to 21%, or around a fifth of people. However, malware is becoming more prevalent, that estimate rose from 10% of computers infected with malware each month, to 30% of computers that are already infected with malware, that's a frightening prospect and perhaps a reminder to have an up-to-date malware protection — it could happen to you! Of course World Backup Day is about more than just backing up data: It's also "a day to talk about the enormous task of preserving our increasingly digital heritage and cultural works for future generations." Think about your old 8mm film, or your MiniDV tapes that can only be read via FireWire, or your thesis paper you wrote using Word Perfect 5.1 on DOS and come up with a plan to modernize the information so that your future generations will be able to admire it, instead of simply finding a 5.25" plastic square, shrugging, and throwing it in the garbage. If you already backup your data, share your strategy. If you have modernized your data, let us know how you did it. And if you haven't done either of these things, take the pledge to not only back up your data but to also modernize it.
