    Microsoft confirms a bug preventing Outlook and other Office apps from opening on Windows by Taras Buria According to Microsoft, Windows 10 and 11 users may experience a bug preventing Outlook and other apps from launching after installing the latest Patch Tuesday update (KB5027231, released on June 13, 2023). The company has updated its Windows Health Dashboard documentation to provide the necessary details about the problem and offer affected customers a workaround. Microsoft says the bug affects 32-bit Office installed on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 (client versions 22H2 and 21H2, plus Windows Server 2022). Even though Microsoft changed the default Office installation from 32-bit to 64-bit in 2018, many people may still be using 32-bit Office. However, you need a specific antivirus and a specific version to experience the problem—according to Microsoft, the issue occurs on systems using Trellix Endpoint Security version earlier than 35.31.25. After installing KB5027231 or later updates on Windows devices with certain antivirus, antimalware or security software installed, you might not be able to open Microsoft or third-party apps. Some known affected apps are Microsoft Outlook and other Microsoft Office apps. This issue only occurs with 32-bit apps running on 64-bit Windows with Trellix Endpoint Security version earlier than 35.31.25. When attempting to open an affected app, Event Log indicates an access violation with the error "module is unknown". This issue is not likely to be encountered by consumers using Windows devices in their home. Affected customers can resolve the problem by updating Trellix Endpoint Security Agent to version 35.31.25 and newer. Although Microsoft has only mentioned Trellix Endpoint Security Agent, other antivirus apps might cause the same problem. Therefore, the company recommends that those using other anti-malware solutions and experiencing issues with Office apps should contact customer support of the security software they use.     Microsoft Defender may soon get installed on your Windows PC automatically by Usama Jawad Although Windows PCs already come with a built-in antivirus solution in the form of Windows Security, Microsoft also offers another standalone utility for Microsoft 365 subscribers, called Microsoft Defender. This tool may now be automatically installed on your PC soon. In an email recently sent out to Microsoft 365 subscribers (and received by yours truly at Neowin) with the subject "Keep your identity safer online", Microsoft has outlined the benefits of using Microsoft Defender. Along with mentioning these, the Redmond tech firm has snuck in an interesting note at the end which says: The Defender app will soon be automatically added to your Windows 10 or Windows 11 device during a routine update of your Microsoft 365 apps. Look for it in the Start Menu and make sure to sign in to activate your protections. Indeed, some Twitter users have already been caught by surprise seeing Microsoft Defender automatically installed on their PC. Interestingly, a Microsoft support document mentions this change with little fanfare and notes that Microsoft Defender will soon be installed on your PC just like a regular Microsoft 365 app: Starting in late February of 2023, the Microsoft Defender app will be included in the Microsoft 365 installer. That means that when you install the Microsoft 365 apps on your Windows device, the Microsoft Defender app will automatically be installed for you along with the other apps. If you have an active Microsoft 365 subscription and have already installed the Microsoft 365 apps, then the Microsoft Defender app will be automatically installed for you with the next update. Just launch it from the Start menu and sign in with the personal Microsoft account you use for Microsoft 365. It is important to note that you do not necessarily need Microsoft Defender on your Windows PC thanks to Windows Security, but it could serve as a useful one-stop shop for protection across all your supported devices. It's also a software that you can download directly from the Microsoft Store but note that you'll need to sign in from your Microsoft account to activate the associated protection.

    Microsoft recommends interesting change for Exchange Server security by Usama Jawad Although deploying an antivirus solution in your Exchange Server environment is a good practice recommended by Microsoft, the company also has some guidance about folder and process exclusions. Objects listed as exclusions are not scanned by the antivirus system. The main reason for having certain objects in the exclusions list is that any files due to be scanned by the antivirus may be locked for quarantine and if Exchange Server tries to utilize them for legitimate purposes, it will result in errors and failures. However, the Redmond tech firm has now shared updated guidance about which objects to mark as exclusions. Interestingly, it has recommended organizations to remove Temporary ASP.NET Files, Inetsrv folders, and PowerShell and w3wp processes from the exclusions list. Basically, it now wants these objects to be a part of the real-time and scheduled scanning performed by an antivirus solution. Microsoft's rationale is that times have now changed in the cybersecurity world and it's better to scan these objects for the detection of IIS webshells and backdoor modules. Microsoft has recommended the removal of the following objects from the exclusions list: Folders %SystemRoot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Temporary ASP.NET Files %SystemRoot%\System32\Inetsrv Processes %SystemRoot%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\PowerShell.exe %SystemRoot%\System32\inetsrv\w3wp.exe Through its own validation process, Microsoft has confirmed that if you use Microsoft Defender in Exchange Server 2019, removing the aforementioned exclusions will not have a negative impact on performance. It has also noted that the configuration change should not adversely affect Exchange Server 2013 or 2016 either, but if you do run into issues, add the exclusions back and report your findings to Microsoft.
