  1. YouTube will remove recommended videos for users with turned-off watch history by Omer Dursun YouTube announced today it will no longer show recommended videos on parts of the platform like the homepage and Up Next to users who have turned off their watch history entirely. The change was announced on a YouTube support page, explaining that video recommendations rely on watch history data to surface relevant content. With watch history off, users will see a mostly blank homepage with just the search bar and side menu. YouTube said this is to "make it clearer which YouTube features rely on watch history" and allow users to search and browse subscriptions and topics instead of recommendations more easily. However, the change does not seem to impact logged-out users without accounts and watch history. Recommendations will still be shown to them. Your home feed may look a lot different: you'll be able to see the search bar and the left-hand guide menu, with no feed of recommended videos thus allowing you to more easily search, browse subscribed channels and explore Topic tabs instead. For users with a watch history turned off, the lack of tailored recommendations could be seen as positive or negative. On the positive side, it may allow more focus on subscribed content. However, on the negative side, it removes the chance to discover new videos. Early feedback on the reduced recommendations has been mixed, with some praising more control while others will miss the algorithm's suggested videos. It remains to be seen how most users will respond to seeing a more blank, search-focused homepage on YouTube in the future. The new experience will roll out slowly over the next few months. This follows another change to YouTube's privacy options. Last week, Google introduced a new 1080p premium video option for YouTube streaming on desktops and laptops, offering higher quality and clarity at a higher bitrate, and the feature is gradually rolling out to TV-based streaming devices.

  3. Spotify looking to add music videos to its app by Paul Hill Spotify has been around for a long time now and in that time other rivals have entered the area, namely YouTube Music with its inclusion of music videos. Now, Spotify wants music videos in its app too and is in talks with partners to deliver this, Bloomberg has reported. The music streaming app already contains some visuals through canvases that musicians can upload. They are looping GIFs that last up to 10 seconds but that’s still nowhere near as engaging as a full-length music video. Earlier this year, the company introduced Clips, a short-form video feature that allows artists to better connect with fans. While this is definitely a great feature for connecting with audiences, it still does not fill the gap of full-length music videos. Recognizing the gap in its offering, the company is now talking with its partners about bringing full-length music videos to the platform. The information was disclosed to Bloomberg by anonymous sources who were not at liberty to discuss the issue publicly because talks are still ongoing. When asked for comment, Spotify denied to confirm the rumours. While it’s likely true that talks are underway, the company won’t want to say anything publicly in case it jeopardizes the talks or if they fall through for any reason. What’s not clear from the reporting is whether the music videos will come to the desktop and web apps or whether they’re only intended for mobile users. YouTube Music offers music videos on both its website and mobile app, so it’s likely that Spotify will aim at doing the same. Earlier this month, Neowin reported that Spotify was looking to launch a new tier called Spotify HiFi. Perhaps the company will launch music videos on particular tiers to save money on bandwidth costs. Hopefully, we’ll hear more soon.

  6. Chrome 107 is landing today with HEVC decoding support, despite pushback from Mozilla by Usama Jawad Google Chrome 106 arrived four weeks ago with lots of experimental features and deprecations, which means that it is time for the availability of the next major version of the browser. Chrome 107 seems to be a similar update in terms of the number of new supported APIs, but one interesting functionality this time around is support for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). HEVC, also known as H.265, is a video compression format that is supported by many modern applications. Chrome 107 now supports it by default, which is interesting because of the viewpoints held by other browser vendors. Although Apple's Safari WebKit team supports HEVC too, Mozilla has historically been against it. In discussions dating back to 2016, Mozilla can be seen emphasizing that it has no plans for HEVC because it is "patent encumbered". Although it has stated that it will focus on supporting AV1 instead, there has been pushback from developers and other members of the community with one comment on the same thread arguing that: The request is not for Mozilla to provide HEVC video decoding in Firefox, which would require Mozilla to license HEVC. The request is to support (pass through) HEVC when the device supports it, as Safari and Chrome do. The device handles the video decoding, and as such, the device OEM is responsible for licensing all required HEVC patents. Device OEMs have been licensing and supporting HEVC for many years. As of 2018 the majority of mobile devices supported HEVC decoding. Either way, it seems like Chrome will go ahead with supporting HEVC decoding by default, regardless of what Mozilla thinks. Other smaller features enabled by default include improvements to the CSS grid-template properties interpolation to allow developers to achieve specific interactive effects, hints for display surfaces with the ability to exclude the current tab, and showing a button to switch display tabs during screen-sharing. Additionally, there is an ignoreCase option for URLPattern, better render-blocking support, and a "rel" attribute for form elements. Switching gears to experimental features behind developer flags and Origin trials, we have the following: Developer trial (behind a developer flag) Declarative PendingBeacon API Permissions-Policy: unload Same-site cross-origin prerendering triggered by the speculation rules API Style Container Queries for CSS Custom Properties Web Authentication Conditional UI Origin trial Declarative PendingBeacon API Permissions-Policy: unload Finally, in terms of deprecations, we just have the Expect-CT HTTP header that is getting the ax. It was a way for websites to migrate to Certificate Transparency (CT) enforcement. However, Google says that this is now required by default anyway and since no other browser vendor implemented this configuration, there will be no impact on current use-cases. Chrome 107 will start rolling out in the later hours of today. If Chrome does not automatically update to version 107 for you throughout the course of the day, head over to Help > About Google Chrome to trigger the update once it becomes available. Next up is Chrome 108 which will hit the Beta channel on October 27, followed by a Stable release on November 29.
  7. Twitter now allows you to attach different media files to a single tweet by Rahul Naskar Twitter has announced a new feature to allow users to tell stories with photos, GIFs, and videos in a single tweet. While explaining the new functionality, the support account of the microblogging site said that it would mean users can now include a photo, GIF, and video in a single tweet. However, support for this feature is currently limited to Android and iOS users. Twitter has not announced this capability for its web client. The company might have prioritized Android and iOS platforms because most use phones, not PCs and Macs, to capture photos and record videos. Get ready to mix it up with visuals on Twitter. You can now add a combination of media to your Tweet on Android and iOS. That means you can include a photo, GIF, and video (or two!) all in the same Tweet. Tap the photo icon in the Tweet composer to start mixing your media. pic.twitter.com/9D1cCzjtmI — Twitter Support (@TwitterSupport) October 5, 2022 Fortunately for Android and iOS users, Twitter does not require a Blue subscription ($4.99 a month) to allow users to add a combination of media files to their tweets. If you do not see the change active yet, make sure you are running the latest version of the Twitter app. Twitter started rolling out another functionality this week: the much-awaited Edit Tweet capability. However, it is currently limited to Twitter Blue subscribers in select counties, including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. test went well, Edit Tweet is now rolling out to Twitter Blue members in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand! US coming soon pic.twitter.com/7NNPRC0t1I — Twitter Blue (@TwitterBlue) October 3, 2022 While these changes might be helpful for users, the future of the microblogging site is unclear now that Elon Musk has again shown interest in acquiring Twitter with his original $44 billion bid.

    Video editing station

I have a 19 yr old step daughter which is really wanting to get into video editing and has been torturing her poor phone with complex edits and the like. This is sort of a one-off purchase meaning it needs to be a good investment. She has a special account to purchase a system with and we would like to stay that way in lieu of building one. I know we will be using two monitors, one for the video editor and the other for the video preview. I am thinking about adding on an 8tb NAS drive so she can save her videos there after they have been worked on, including any raw footage. I am thinking 32GB of RAM, but this as far as I have gotten with the system basics. She will be using the latest GoPro camera (yet to be determined which model), for the video making. I am lost though anymore with what off the shelf systems we can purchase which would be suitable for 5 years or so. We are open to Mac's as well as any other system. Which CPU would be ideal for this and since it is an off-the-shelf system, also how much Video RAM would be needed to effectively render a HD or 4K video? I'm not really asking for brand recommendations, but more of an idea of what I should focus on for specs.

    Distracted Driving PSA

A friend's kid contacted me asking if I could help him with a class project about distracted driving. He showed me his story board. Essentially, he was going play an old man and get to get love tapped by the car and then fall down. I told him that might just look like an insurance scam, because we can't actually run you over and even love tapping you is not safe. I told him I have a better idea... You can read this after watching the video (don't want to give anything away) You can read this after watching the video (don't want to give anything away) He told me he got an A+ On the project and today he sent me a video of his school YouTube station, and his video was selected from the class project as the one to be featured on. He told me he's now famous in school lol.
  13. Meta is bringing Facebook Reels to more than 150 countries by Paul Hill Meta has said that it’s bringing Facebook Reels for iOS and Android to more than 150 countries around the world to help creators increase their audience size and help them make more money. The company said users spend around half of their time watching videos on Facebook and Instagram and that Reels is its fastest-growing content format by far. While Meta has things like the Reels Play bonus programme where creators can earn up to $35,000 per month based on the views of their qualifying reels, Meta also wants to expand the monetisation options available to reels creators. It’s working on integrating ad revenue share and fan support and in the coming weeks, it will be expanding overlay ad tests for creators in North America and further afield. Overlay ads will be available in two formats, as a semi-transparent overlay at the bottom of the reel and as static sticker ads that can be placed anywhere by the creator. According to Meta, reels will begin appearing in multiple places around Facebook for more users. They’ll be located in Stories if someone shares them there, you’ll be able to view them in the Watch tab, a new Reels label will be available at the top of the Feed where you can create and watch reels quickly, and in some countries, Facebook will show you suggested reels in your feed even if you don’t follow the creator. When viewing reels, you’ll be able to like, comment, or share the content with friends and you can also use Facebook Stars to reward creators financially.

  15. Vodafone wants big tech to shoulder growing infrastructure costs by Paul Hill Vodafone has announced that it wants legislators in Europe to take action so that big tech firms, who are driving up the demand for data, are made to pay for some of the costs around infrastructure upgrades. In Vodafone’s view, these companies are profiting massively without shouldering their part of the cost to maintain the networks that their businesses rely on. According to Vodafone, 70% of all traffic running over mobile networks is coming from places such as video streaming, gaming, and social media – all of which can require large amounts of data usage. Vodafone says that firms like Google and Facebook, who are driving most of this traffic, aren’t paying for the mobile infrastructure and this is making it harder for mobile carriers to operate. It said that as time goes on, retail markets are in perpetual decline in terms of profitability. Mobile operators are in no position to negotiate with these tech platforms, according to Vodafone, due to their strong market positions. As Vodafone says it and other operators can’t make viable returns on significant infrastructure spend, this could put further development at risk which, it believes, will lead to deteriorating network performance. Rather than overcoming this adversity by developing new technologies or throttling heavy data applications, Vodafone is asking legislators in Europe to force big tech platforms to help shoulder the cost of network infrastructure so that the 2030 connectivity targets in the EU can be met. While the immediate benefit of Vodafone's plan is easy to see, hidden is the fact that big tech platforms will have less money to reinvest in their own companies to develop new products and services.

  18. Windows 11 Dev Channel gets a new Media Player app by Usama Jawad A couple of months ago, Microsoft inadvertently showed off a new media playing experience that it was working on. However, little was known about it due to the fact that only a screenshot of it had appeared online. Today, Microsoft has confirmed the existence of a new "Media Player" app for Windows 11, and it is rolling it out to those on the Dev Channel right now. Microsoft has noted that the Media Player app will replace Groove Music on Windows 11 eventually and all existing libraries and playlists will seamlessly and automatically migrate to the new experience. Apart from that, Media Player will obviously be able to play local music and video content as well. Microsoft has noted that the new app has been designed with Windows 11 aesthetics in mind, so do expect rounded corners and other design elements related to the OS. Other features that Microsoft has touted are album art and "rich artist imagery" that will be visible both in the full screen mode as well as the mini player. Keyboard shortcuts and accessibility-focused enhancements are in tow too. The legacy Windows Media Player will apparently co-exist with the new Media Player app for now though, if you would rather use that. Microsoft has noted that it is already aware of issues related to playing content stored in network locations, and those related to editing metadata or UI components not respecting app theme preferences. That said, the company will be looking to fix these problems and add new features to the app with the passage of time. Microsoft has not committed to a general release date for Media Player on Windows 11 yet, and has not indicated that it will arrive on Windows 10.

  21. YouTube update will highlight authoritative medical advice videos by Paul Hill Have you ever used YouTube to learn more about an illness that may be affecting you? Apparently, it’s something a lot of people do and YouTube has noticed, so it’s going to start highlighting authoritative medical videos on its platform. Dr Garth Graham, Director and Global Head of Healthcare and Public Health Partnerships at YouTube said the new initiative puts health professionals at the core of its efforts to provide useful information. From this week, YouTube users in the United States will begin to see the new features when searching for health-related videos. Health source information panels will be shown on videos if the content is from a reliable content creator and health content shelves will highlight authoritative videos when you search for corresponding health issues. While these notices will help to find good quality information, videos from other sources will still be available. Discussing the work that has gone into this update, Dr Graham said: “Back in February, YouTube asked an expert panel convened by the National Academy of Medicine to consider the question of how to define “authoritative health content sources” and the ways in which those sources attain and maintain their authority. The expert panel drafted these principles for health sources, which are the first of their kind. We hope that other tech companies will also review and consider how these principles might help inform their work with their own products and platforms.” As things stand, only accredited health organizations and government entities are included in the health context features rollout but YouTube is searching for ways to broaden the eligibility so more authoritative content is available to viewers. YouTube is also looking for ways to bring this feature to audiences around the world.

  23. GitHub introduces video uploading across its platform by Paul Hill GitHub has announced that it’s now possible for users to upload videos across its platform. MP4 and MOV files can be uploaded in issues, pull requests, discussions, and more. The inclusion of this feature will open up new possibilities including clearer demonstrations of new features or bugs in software projects. The firm previously released video uploads as a beta feature back in December but now it’s considered stable enough for everybody on the platform to use. Now that it’s available, all users can upload videos to help maintainers reproduce bugs, provide context on pull requests for reviewers, give a demonstration of new features currently in the prototype phase, and more. Commenting on the ability to upload videos, Lauren Brose from GitHub said: “We’re excited to see the unique ways you use video in your workflows across GitHub. We hope you will start to bring video into your day-to-day through services you already use, like Loom and Vimeo Record to share project context, provide code review feedback, and share launch updates through free screen and webcam recording.” The ability to upload videos is also arriving with mobile support. Both the iOS and Android GitHub mobile apps are capable of uploading videos to the platform but you’ll need to update the apps to their latest versions.
