Toyota commits Kamikaze on Tesla Cybertruckhttps://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1436930-toyota-commits-kamikaze-on-tesla-cybertruck/ image.jpeg

The California Highway Patrol confirmed to The Verge that police responded to a two-vehicle incident on SR 35 in Palo Alto. No one involved in the crash suffered a major injury. According to Teslarati, the Cybertruck was driven by a Tesla engineer based in San Francisco.

In a statement to The Verge, California police said the following:

Quote

Our preliminary investigation indicates a Toyota Corolla was traveling south on SR-35 southbound, south of Page Mill Road, at an unknown speed, when the driver, for unknown reasons, turned to the right and subsequently struck a dirt embankment on the right shoulder. The Toyota then re-entered the roadway, crossed over the double yellow lines into the northbound lane, and crashed into a Tesla Cybertruck traveling north on SR-35 northbound.

The images posted to Reddit reveal significant damage to the Toyota Corolla’s front, while the Cybertruck appears relatively unscathed in comparison, despite the deployment of airbags.

Kroger Gas Pump Fuel Injector Cleaner - Worth It?https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1432315-kroger-gas-pump-fuel-injector-cleaner-worth-it/ I always fill up my car at the Kroger gas station. While fueling they try to sell you fuel injector cleaner. All you have to do is push the button for it and it's automatically added to your gas as you fill up.

I have a few problems with this. First, how do you know if it actually added the cleaner into the gas line? For all I know it doesn't do anything and just takes your money.
Next, how do you know how much it actually added, and maybe it's been sitting in the tanks forever and has expired, got water in it, etc.
I just don't like how it's behind the scenes, but I do like the convenience of it.
The last time I tried to add octane booser into my car it ended up all pouring down the side of my car despite the bottle being all the way in the filler, so I don't like to use the bottles from the auto parts store when possible.

We're like kids on Christmas Morning!https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1429986-were-like-kids-on-christmas-morning/ Last month our car was totaled when someone rear-ended us so we have been driving a rental from the guilty party's insurance who hit us, and now a loaner vehicle from a dealership while we are anxiously awaiting the delivery of our shiny new 23' Civic EX.  We placed an order for it on the 22nd of May where it was "In Transit" and so far it hasn't arrived, but we've been told it should be sometime this week (This is the 2nd delay on it), as it's at our local shipping port and the delivery truck is waiting for a full load before they drive the 20 something miles to the dealer.

I tell you, I feel like a kid on Christmas morning waiting for the phone call to come down and pick up our new car.  This is a first for my wife and I and while being able to drive a loaner (2023 Honda HRV), it's just not the same if you know what I mean. :)

Recommendations for a portable hand-held car vacuum?https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1422128-recommendations-for-a-portable-hand-held-car-vacuum/ Hello,

Does anyone have a recommendation for a cordless hand-held car vacuum?

I had been using a model that charged via USB-C, however, the battery pack in it died and from examination, it appears there's no easy way to replace the cells after disassembly.

What I am looking for:

  • works well
  • easy to empty out
  • small enough to fit in trunk without taking up a lot of space
  • comes with various adapter (brush heads, crevice tool, etc.)
  • charges via adapter (doesn't have to be USB-C, any standard kind of barrel connector is okay)
  • a replaceable (or at least repairable) battery pack is preferred

I do not have a specific budget in mind, maybe up to $100?  Thank you.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

Two totaled...https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1412408-two-totaled/ Happened about a month apart. First was my parents van. Mom was going around a corner and some idiot was in her lane. She swerved or else could have been worse. She was just a little sore. Other guys fault.

Second was my sister.   She had the green and the guy turning left had an flashing orange arrow. He was driving and turned hitting the front driver side. He was driving a jeep compass and my sister a Nissan Versa. 3 air bags deployed. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance.  Nice seat belt bruise, bruised ribs, hurt her neck and got glass in her arm. Week later she is still in pain but doing better. Chest really hurts and muscle spams. She also has a couple chipped teeth. Other guys fault as well and his insurance is paying for everything.

Hopefully no more accidents in the family anytime soon but happy everyone is ok.

Last week the gear shift shaft snapped off leaving me in the middle of the road with nowhere to go, luckily a towing company arrived in around 20mins because one of their drivers drove past and I flagged him down and a call was made. Only €65 to fix incl labor, but the tow to the garage was €150 :(

Hyundai green-lights development of a 'walking car' with 4 dog-like legs

Rugged Jeeps and pickups can explore the great outdoors. But for those who want vehicles to travel further into unnavigable terrain, Hyundai is working on what it calls a “Transformer-class vehicle” right out of a science-fiction film.

The Korean automaker has formed an Ultimate Mobility Vehicles Studio in Silicon Valley to develop its so-called “walking car,” It's based on the Elevate concept vehicle that wowed visitors to the 2019 CES technology show in Las Vegas.

Envisioned initially as a vehicle to assist first-responders to reach remote disaster zones, the walking car will also be explored by Hyundai’s team for its potential in consumer and industrial uses.

Oh yea, I fixed that son of a gun (AC Compressor pulley)https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1395027-oh-yea-i-fixed-that-son-of-a-gun-ac-compressor-pulley/ Long story short.  I'm not a mechanic, I'm medical.  Most I ever do is change my oil (on the Explorer not the Infiniti).  I have an old '01 Explorer and last week the bearing went out on the AC compressor pulley.  Took it to two shops and they both quoted me between 550-700.  Bump that.

Got on YouTube ... watched a few videos and went "yea, I can do that".

-Thursday after work I went at it.  Removed the serpentine belt, unscrewed/removed the AC compressor clutch, removed the pulley and clutch coil.  Went to the Autozone website and ordered a new AC clutch/pulley/coil package with next day delivery.

-Friday (I was off work) the package came about 2.  Installed the clutch coil which took a pretty long time (lots of gentle hammering).  Tried to install the pulley ... and the sucker wouldn't go on.  Bloodied my knuckle and  called it a day.  Figured I had screwed up and was wondering how to get it to the shop with my head hanging low.

But...!

-Today - After a couple cups of coffee I was back at it.  Armed with fine grit sanding paper ... I gentle went around the edge of the compressor shaft and was finally able to start working on the pulley.  After many gentle taps with said hammer ... sucker went all the way on and I secured it with the snap ring.  Before installing the clutch, I hooked the serpentine belt back up...cranked it and to my surprise the pulley did go spinning off.  Installed the clutch .. cranked it again ... turned on the AC and holy crap...it worked.  No weird noises, sparks or smoke.

So .. I spent ..

$86 for the kit

$30 for the serpentine belt removal tool

$15 for snap ring pliers

$8 for a baby hammer

=$139

So basically I saved at least 400 bucks (if it holds together...ha).

No real reason for this post ... just happy when I fix something which normally isn't in my "comfort zone" especially when it saved hundreds of dollars.

Old pulley removed.  You can see the ball bearings in the center of the pulley (left) ... when it went out it produced a lot of heat/smoke which I'm assuming started cooking the clutch coil (right).

Morale of this story ... you can do anything with YouTube and a hammer.

Car stereo problem..https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1394931-car-stereo-problem/ Hi everyone...I'm new here and do not know exactly where to post this so for give me if I'm in the wrong area... Anyhow yesterday I rewired my jvc car stereo because I was adding a distortion filter due to the fact I replaced my back up lights with led lights in my 97 Chevy S10 and they were causing interference with my speakers when I would depress the brake pedal..well during that process I had a ark due to my power wire to the stereo touching my key chain...well didn't think nothing of it and put everything back together and turned my key back to aux. The stereo system sounded good...no problem...well..then I decided to go for a ride and that's when I found that when the truck is running I get a cut out or popping that comes from all my speakers..really annoying!! So when it's not running it sounds great at all volumes ,but when the truck is running it's popping in and out and sounds aweful...any one have any idea what happened?? I've checked all the fuses and their all fine..I've removed the filter and that did not fix it .. maybe lost a good ground when it arked off the key?? I don't know.but sure could use some help...thanks for any input I'm at wits end with this....

Performance Chip for 6th gen Monte?https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1392313-performance-chip-for-6th-gen-monte/ I was bored one day looking on Amazon and I saw something that caught my attention. It is a performance chip that is made specifically for a 6th gen Monte Carlo. The description claims that it adds up to 35 hp and 5 mpg. The cost is around $70. I was curious if anyone here has any experience with performance chips in their Monte. Is it worth it? If so, what brand would you recommend?

BMW Will Reportedly Charge Subscription for Owners to use Apple CarPlay *update*https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1353726-bmw-will-reportedly-charge-subscription-for-owners-to-use-apple-carplay-update/
Quote

//

Though many manufacturers, even those of semi trucks, currently offer CarPlay as either a standard feature or optional upgrade, BMW is reportedly changing the game with America's most-wanted new car feature. The automaker is shifting from a one-time payment of $300 to enable CarPlay, to a new subscription-based service which will allow users to choose whether or not CarPlay is right for them. Smith told The Verge that this change was to make it more affordable for those who switch from iOS to Android mid-ownership, however many users across the internet see this more of a cash grab than innovation.

//

In a world of ever-changing car buying models, it becomes easy to see how this type of move will benefit manufacturers. BMW, for example, might lease a vehicle for four years, recouping $240 in subscription fees (remember, the first year is free) instead of the one-time $300 purchase of CarPlay. The vehicle comes back from its lease and is sold to the new owner for a five year period. This new owner then pays $80 each year of their ownership, bringing the total income for the subscription service to $720 over nine years, a 240% increase over the static cost for the first owner.

/snip

Full article at TheDrive

tl:dr ... Instead of charging $300 for AirPlay, BMW is thinking about an annual subscription of $80 (first year free).

(sarcasm to follow)  Next up, subscriptions to use anti-lock brakes and seat belts.  Using the AC requires a cruise control subscription.

Why is my steering wheel off center?https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/598142-why-is-my-steering-wheel-off-center/I noticed that it seemed to have been getting worse and worse, now if I'm on a straight and level road and driving straight; the steering wheel is off center. :/ I've had my wheels balanced and an alignment done by a reputable company.

Should I worry about this? It's a car from 2004, so its not very old.

Ford Mustang Mach-Ehttps://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1389142-ford-mustang-mach-e/ ford_mach_e.0.jpg

Detroit News...

Ford pins electric future on new Mustang Mach-E

Fifty-five years after Ford Motor Co. introduced the first-ever Mustang, the automaker plans to again leverage that nameplate to propel itself into the future  but this pony car will be an electric SUV.

Officially named the Mustang Mach-E, Ford's first-ever fully electric SUV debuts in Los Angeles on Sunday night nearly two years after the Dearborn automaker first teased the "new all-electric performance SUV" at the 2018 Detroit auto show. The vehicle is expected to be a four-door crossover that borrows design cues from Ford's most iconic model.
>
>
The vehicle would be the cornerstone of a new push into electrification, and Ford would push further there than it ever had before  because it had to. Global automakers expect electric vehicles over the next few decades to become more capable, viable stalwarts in lineups. Ford alone plans to invest $11 billion and bring 40 new electric products to market by the early 2020s - and it needs to set its vehicles apart from competitors.

"It's critical," said Mark Kaufman, Ford global director of electric vehicle marketing. "This product is our first proof-point out the door. This sets the tone for what we're capable of delivering. This sets the tone for what to expect from Ford going forward."
