  3. South Korea plans to launch the first 6G network in 2028 by Justin Luna South Korea announced on Monday that it plans to launch its own sixth-generation (6G) network in 2028. As part of the K-Network 2030 plan, South Korea will secure "world-class" 6G technologies, innovate the "software-based next-generation mobile network" and strengthen the network supply chain. Simultaneously, the government will incentivize local companies to produce equipment, parts, and materials for 6G technology in South Korea. It will also develop an open radio access network that is compatible with any device and enables mobile carriers and enterprises to provide flexible services. To make all of these possible, South Korea is conducting a feasibility study for a research and development project on core 6G technologies. The project is worth 625.3 billion won (~US$482 million). According to the country's Ministry of Science and ICT, the country is carrying out these efforts in a bid to secure an early dominance of the future wireless frequencies. The plan is also aimed at helping the country retain its position in the global competition for future network infrastructure. A report by IP intelligence company IPlytics found that while 4G technology development was mostly dominated by U.S. and European companies, South Korean companies took the lead in 5G development. What's more, South Korea accounted for 25.9% of the number of 5G patents last year. It aims to reach 30% or over in the 6G patent competition. Aside from South Korea, India also aims to launch 6G services before the end of this decade. The South Asian company already has a task force working to achieve the goal. Source: Yonhap News Agency
  4. Google Fi suffers data breach, allowing hackers to steal sensitive information by Justin Luna Google Fi, Google's telecommunications service, has confirmed a data breach that is likely connected to the recent security incident at T-Mobile that exposed the personal data of 37 million customers. In an email sent to customers, Google said that the primary network provider for Google Fi informed them of a suspicious activity involving a third-party system that contained a "limited amount" of Google Fi customer data. While the email didn't explicitly mention T-Mobile, it's very likely that the breach was connected to T-Mobile's incident. This is because Google Fi relies primarily on T-Mobile's 5G network aside from US Cellular for network connectivity, and only the former is known to have recently suffered a security incident. Regarding the Google Fi data breach, Google says the threat actors gained access to data such as phone numbers, SIM card serial numbers, account statuses, account activation dates, and whether a subscriber has international roaming or unlimited SMS. The search giant claims that the attackers didn't take customers' personal information, payment card data, Google Fi passwords or PINs, or the contents of SMS messages or calls. The email says that there is no action required from customers. However, as TechCrunch points out, one Google Fi customer claimed that their phone was briefly hijacked as a result of the attack. A portion of their email from Google read: Additionally, on January 1, 2023 for about 1 hour 48 minutes, your mobile phone service was transferred from your SIM card to another SIM card. During the time of this temporary transfer, the unauthorized access could have involved the use of your phone number to send and receive phone calls and text messages. Despite the SIM transfer, your voicemail could not have been accessed. We have restored Google Fi service to your SIM card. It is not yet known how many people have been affected by the Google Fi data breach as of this writing. Google did say, however, that it is working with its primary network provider to secure the data on the aforementioned third-party system. Source: Android Police via TechCrunch
  5. Meta is upgrading its networks with PTP time sync protocol by Anushe Fawaz Meta has announced the addition of a Precision Time Protocol (PTP) technology for its metaverse, which reduces the time lag between platforms and improves synchronization for different devices. PTP, launched in 2002, enables computer networks across multiple locations to sync down to nanoseconds. Initially, PTP helped synchronize computer clocks globally. It is different from its predecessor, Network Time Protocol, in terms of accuracy as PTP synchronizes clocks down to a millionth of a second. Meta argues the lack of sync can cause delays, network failures, and errors. It mentions how the addition of PTP to Meta’s data centers allows for more synchronization for users during texting and video calls, playing games online, or exploring the Meta Horizon Worlds in the metaverse. Meta adds: “With PTP, the clocks within servers can be synchronized down to nanoseconds. We believe that PTP has the potential to enable synchronization of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) across data centers, which could open up unprecedented AI capabilities that are difficult to achieve today. This level of accuracy will help ensure synchronization of not only the computers on our networks today, but also the advanced systems that will be on our networks in the future.” The company further shared that PTP will become a fundamental aspect of technologies powering the metaverse. According to the blog post, Meta mentions it open-sourced the software and hardware needed to support the inculcation of PTP to the company’s data centers. More details about the deployment of PTP by Meta can be found here.

  7. Hackers are exploiting Microsoft's MFA to gain access to cloud services and networks by Karthik Mudaliar Cybersecurity research firm Mandiant has observed a new trend where hackers are exploiting multifactor authentication (MFA) to exploit and gain access to dormant Microsoft accounts. MFA is an important tool used by organizations to improve security and thwart takeover attacks by hackers. However, there’s a catch. Hackers are taking advantage of the self-enrollment process in the Azure Active Directory and other platforms. Usually, when an organization first enforces MFA, many platforms allow their users to immediately enroll for their MFA device. However, in Azure AD in its default configuration, there is no such enrollment enforced. This means that anyone who has the login credentials for an account can enroll in MFA as long as they are doing it for the first time on that account. The Russian espionage group APT29 had earlier conducted a password guessing attack against a list of emails. For accounts that were set up but never used, the hacker group was able to use them to access the organization's VPN infrastructure. The VPN was using Azure AD for authentication and MFA. Mandiant recommends that organizations ensure all active accounts have at least one MFA device enrolled and work with their platform vendor to add additional verifications to the MFA enrollment process. Microsoft Azure AD recently rolled out a feature to allow organizations to enforce controls around specific actions such as MFA device enrollment. Organizations can also restrict the location of MFA registration to only trusted locations, such as an internal network or trusted devices. They can also use a temporary MFA pass to enroll in MFA when people first join or lose their MFA device. Source: ZDnet (via Mandiant)
  8. Microsoft brings Linux XDP project to Windows by Usama Jawad Linux has a high performance networking project called eXpress Data Path (XDP) that has been part of the Linux kernel since version 4.8. Multiple big tech firms including Google, Amazon, and Intel already invest time and resources in its development. XDP allows apps to achieve low latency and a high throughput in networking. Now, Microsoft has joined the fray with its open-source project "XDP for Windows", based on XDP. The company has described it as its first contribution to the XDP community and has showed inclination to make the network data path truly cross-platform. As of now, XDP for Windows contains a network driver and a placeholder user mode API. Microsoft has emphasized that the project is still under active development but should be ready for testing and prototyping. The firm is also partnering with other firms and adding support for XDP in the MsQuic protocol. Microsoft has noted that anyone can clone the XDP for Windows repository and start building on it since the project is designed to accelerate network performance in multiple scenarios. The company is adding more features such as checksum offload and integration with eBPF for Windows too, but in the meantime, you can check out XDP for Windows on GitHub here. It is important to note that XDP does not work on every piece of hardware and is only supported on a handful of network interface cards (NIC) and drivers right now.

  12. Google announces Private Compute Core Services for deeper network and ML model isolation by Usama Jawad Back when it announced Android 12 in May, Google also announced Private Compute Core. This is an open-source initiative that offers a sandboxed and secure environment that isolates services like Smart Reply, Now Playing, and Live Caption from the rest of the OS and apps. The idea is to keep your data private to your device and utilize the cloud in a privacy-preserving manner. Now, Google has further enhanced this initiative with Private Compute Core Services. Google explains that a lot of Android features utilize machine learning to update models to offer you an experience tailored to you. With Private Compute Core Services, the company will ensure that these updates happen over a private path, such that Private Compute Core features like Smart Reply and Live Caption don't have direct access to the network. This will be done by leveraging from specialized open-source APIs which preserve privacy by removing personally identifiable information (PII) and use techniques like Federated Learning, Federated Analytics, and Private information retrieval, some of which it detailed in May too. Google boasted that: We’re enthusiastic about the potential for machine learning to power more helpful features inside Android, and Android’s Private Compute Core will help users benefit from these features while strengthening privacy protections via the new Private Compute Services. Android is the first open source mobile OS to include this kind of externally verifiable privacy; Private Compute Services helps the Android OS continue to innovate in machine learning, while also maintaining the highest standards of privacy and security. The tech giant has stated that it will publish the source code for Private Compute Core Services publicly so it can be audited by any security researcher.

    Happy SysAdmin Day!

Happy SysAdmin Day! by Steven Parker For 365 days a year, almost 24/7, the sysadmin is toiling away behind the scenes keeping all of the systems up and running, often with nothing more than duct tape and bailing wire. That all changes every year on the last Friday of July. Dubbed "Sysadmin Day," the pseudo-holiday was invented to shed light on the work IT staff does that most regular users never get to see. This year, that day falls on Friday, July 30. From patching Linux servers at 2am to updating database schemas without impacting availability, or keeping abreast of the latest security threats to the organization, the sysadmin role can cover a multitude of different job titles. Unfortunately, not every company recognizes today's festivities. To the sysadmins that work for companies like that, Neowin would like to take a minute and thank you for all you do to keep the lights on at your company. We know that it's a thankless job, but the Internet wouldn't work without it, so kick off your shoes, eat a slice of cake, and relax. But not too much, because you probably have some system maintenance to do this weekend. If you are someone that benefits from these mysterious people in the workplace, don't forget to give your System Administrator a hug an appropriate socially distanced appreciation like an elbow bump, cake, lots of praise, or something. We are sure they will appreciate your efforts!

  15. Having just moved house, I noticed the wifi in my study was patchy. I therefore invested in a TP Link Powerline (TL-WPA4220) to run from my router to my study. It works perfectly on all my personal devices (Windows, Apple, Android etc) with them all getting the full wifi speeds promised by my ISP (Vodafone), both over wifi and ethernet. The main reason I installed this, however, was for a fast reliable connection to my work computer. But whether via wifi or ethernet I'm getting much slower speeds on my work laptop than my personal devices connected to the same powerline - even slower than before I installed it when I was working at the far edge of my router's range. I'll be getting 70mbps download and 25mbps upload speeds on my personal devices and 2mbps download and 5mbps upload on my work computer. I called my work IT, they suggested my ISP was throttling my use (when testing the connection on my work laptop we found that when I connected to my ISPs network / server the speed was as expected, but any other server was very slugglish, which led them to think this). I contacted by ISP who insist they're not throttling my use and it must be something to do with my employer's IT policy. They did give me a static IP address suggesting this might help (but it hasn't). Any ideas why this might be happening? My main suspicoion is that it's something to do with the VPN on my work laptop (zscaler), although when I tried installing a VPN on my own persional laptop it had no effect on speeds. How could my laptop / VPN even recognise that my internet is coming from a different source? Are there any known issues with powerlines accessing secure VPN networks? I'm being bounced around to different people none of whom have a clue, so any advice would be gratefully received!
  16. Hi all, as the title suggests I am getting awful internet speeds while using my powerline adapters. I have been quoted upto 500Mbps and when I do a speedtest from the router, I get around 450Mbps ish. When I use my computer which is upstairs over the powerline, I hit roughly 20-40Mbps. Wireless I get a bit better around 200ish depending on the device. The reason why I want to use wired, is because there are too many devices on wifi and I would like to use a lot more bandwidth while streaming or gaming. My question is, what could be the cause of this? I have tried different plugs and cables but no change. Any suggestions on what else I could try? The powerline adapters that I am using are TP-link model number:TP-PA511
  17. Hey everyone, I haven't touched my network setup in a long time as it's been working with no issues for months. Over the last week or so, I've noticed that some devices struggle to stay connected to the network. At the moment, there's a Kindle and a desktop that are struggling to stay connected. I've no idea where to start looking into this so any pointers would be great! I have a USG, two Unifi APs (Lite) and a D-Link switch (DGS-1100-08P).

Commenting on the news, Sharon Meadows, Director of Devices, Partnerships & Business Development at EE, said: “As the UK’s number one network, we always look to provide customers with the latest technology and experiences – whether that’s the fastest speeds, or ground-breaking smartphones. By partnering with Motorola on the new razr, our customers will get exclusive access to what already promises to be an iconic new smartphone. Only on EE will customers get the most out of the new razr with the UK’s best network, best in class unlimited plans and great swappable benefits.” The Motorola Razr is due to launch in January 2020 for $1,500 (£1,170). EE has not announced the plans which it will sell this device on but the price announced by Motorola suggests that the plans will be pricey.
  20. Hi all, Apologies if this has a thread somewhere.... I would like to know what people are using for network analyses, free/OSS or paid solutions. And with analysis I mean a more or less simple way to collect data about: - All computers on the network, - The OS and applications installations/versions - Network traffic/port use So a 'security risk' based check of the hardware and software running, so you can plan some security hardening on your systems. I know about applications like WireShark for network traffic checks, but would like to know if there are applications out there that can collect a lot of data at once. There's quite a few apps out there, but it's interesting to see what people actually using for this. cheers for any tips, links etc. rob
