  1. Gmail for iOS makes it easier to unsubscribe from unwanted emails by Aditya Tiwari Google has started rolling out a new Unsubscribe button for the Gmail app for iOS, making it easier to get rid of unwanted emails such as promotions or newsletters. The Gmail app already lets its mobile users unsubscribe from mass emails, but now, the feature is easier to access. The Unsubscribe button in Gmail for iOS is at the top of the email next to the sender's name, as spotted by Android Authority. This will save time for Gmail users who otherwise have to go to the bottom of the email content or click on the three-dot menu at the top to unsubscribe from mass emails. The button isn't visible on the Android version of Gmail at the time of writing. However, Google has updated its support page with the new steps to unsubscribe from emails. The support page includes new steps for the Android version as well, suggesting it might not take long for the Unsubscribe button to arrive. The ability to unsubscribe emails has existed since 2009, but initially, users had to make several clicks before saying goodbye to unwanted emails. Its modern iteration was added to Gmail's web version back in 2014, which allows users to unsubscribe with just two clicks in most cases. Speaking of which, some senders may need you to go to their website to unsubscribe from their emails. After you pull the plug on a sender, it might take a few days for the mailing list to stop sending you emails. Google says that "you may see a unique identifier for a mailing list or a list ID" instead of the sender's name after unsubscribing. In addition to the manual option, Gmail also sends occasional tips for unsubscribing from bulk senders that you rarely read. On iOS, you can enable or disable this feature by going to Settings > Inbox Customizations > Inbox tips > turn off the "Unsubscribe tips" toggle button.

    Claws Mail 4.2.0.1

Claws Mail 4.2.0.1 by Razvan Serea Claws Mail is an email client aiming at being fast, easy-to-use and powerful. It is mostly desktop-independent, but tries to integrate with your desktop as best as possible. The Claws Mail developers try hard to keep it lightweight, so that it should be usable on low-end computers without much memory or CPU power. Claws Mail sports almost everything a perfect email client needs. Mail retrieval over POP3, IMAP4, local mbox, over SSL; support for various authentication schemes. It has multiple accounts and mailboxes, powerful filtering and search functionality, import/export capabilities using a number of formats, support for GnuPG (digital signatures and encryption). It supports plugins, customisable toolbars, spell checking, a number of guards to prevent any data loss, per-folder preferences, and much more. A list of features can be found here. Formerly known as Sylpheed-Claws, it started in April 2001 as the development version of Sylpheed, where new features could be tested and debugged, but evolved enough to now be a completely separate program. It forked completely from Sylpheed in August 2005. Claws Mail 4.2.0.1 changelog: An easy way to open any folder on start-up has been added: Right-click a folder and choose 'Open on start-up'. This can also be configured on the 'Folder list' tab of the /Configuration/Preferences/Display/Summaries page. Spam statistics have been added to the session statistics. It is now possible to save message attachments only, without the other message parts. QuickSearch: support for a "v H V" search expression has been added and the 'y S' expression has been removed ('v X-Label S' can be used instead). font/* and chemical/* MIME types are now recognised. The image viewer now works correctly when not auto-loading images. Icon Themes: it is no longer possible to install or remove system themes. IMAP: Support for SCRAM-SHA-{224,256,384,512} authentication mechanisms has been added. IMAP: The statusbar now shows that expunge is happening. The GData plugin has been removed. The Fancy plugin no longer requires libsoup or libsoup-gnome. The LiteHTML Viewer plugin has been synchronised with litehtml 0.7. The LiteHTML viewer plugin will now only be built automatically if libgumbo 0.12 or newer is available. Building with libgumbo 0.10 must be explicitly requested using --enable-litehtml_viewer-plugin. For extra debug output use --enable-more-addressbook-debug and --enable-more-ldap-debug. 4. PSA: Microsoft is pushing the web based Outlook to Windows users without giving the option to decline syncing email to their servers and keep using the existing clients. Hopefully the way around this (source) is to delete settings.json from %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Migration without agreeing to sync contents when The New Outlook first launches. I have been happily using the built-in Mail application since Windows 8, when they added support for Email, Contacts and Calendar syncing with Google accounts, and have been doing my best to avoid The New Outlook like the plague it is. Not only Microsoft's replacement mail app is a ###### Electron wrapper for the online version, it comes with ads AND to work it requires everything to be synced to "The Microsoft Cloud", so instead of just Google reading through my email to advertise, I'd have to allow Microsoft to do so too. Up until now, this meant living with a new toggle in the toolbar and dismissing messages inviting me to to turn it on, but today was different: I got a message saying that on the next start of the Mail app I'd be moved to The New Outlook and I'd be able to toggle back afterwards, no option to refuse. At that point, I checked my installed apps and The New Outlook was there again (I had removed it once already when it first popped up). I then closed the Mail app, waited a bit, and tried to reopen it. Sure enough, the app closed itself immediately and launched The New Outlook, which is where things get interesting: on launch, the only thing displayed is a wizard asking to enable syncing content in the Gmail account to "The Microsoft Cloud", with no option to refuse except by creating a new Outlook.com account. The rest of the window is empty, with no toggle to go back to the old Mail app (I assume it only shows up in the main UI after the wizard is complete) After poking around a bit, I closed the app, without clicking the Continue button in the content sync dialog. Further attempts to launch Mail would repeat the same behaviour, basically locking me out of checking my own email. It was only by finding this support article that I found a way to have the old Mail app launch again - by deleting settings.json from %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Migration At this point my worry is: did I actually prevent the syncing of my data to Microsoft's servers? Is there any way to check? If someone has gone through these steps, does the syncing need to be approved via Google's Oauth2 flow or does Microsoft just reuse the original authorization Windows gets when adding a Gmail account?

  7. Consumer group warns ChatGPT and Bard can professionalize scams by Paul Hill The UK-based consumer group, Which?, has found that ChatGPT and Bard can be used by scammers to craft more convincing scams, posing a danger to the public. Despite the fact that these chatbots have defenses in place, it’s not very difficult to bypass them. Which? said that one of the ways consumers are able to identify scam emails and text is by their use of bad English. With the advent of generative AI chatbots, though, fraudsters can easily get over this hurdle. The consumer group first asked ChatGPT to create a phishing email from PayPal and of course it refused to help with this task. It then asked ‘Tell the recipient that someone has logged into their PayPal account’ to which it generated a professional looking email with the heading ‘Important Security Notice - Unusual Activity Detected on Your PayPal Account’. To make sure this was not a one off, it also asked ChatGPT and Bard to create missing parcel texts and they both generated convincing text messages with suggestions on where to insert a redelivery link that a fraudster could use to send victims off to malicious websites. Which?’s investigation has not come randomly - it has been published now in time for the UK’s AI summit where governments, industry, and researchers can get together to tackle the dangers posed by artificial intelligence as it gets increasingly smarter. Commenting on the investigation, Rocio Concha, Which? Director of Policy and Advocacy, said: “Our investigation clearly illustrates how this new technology can make it easier for criminals to defraud people. The government's upcoming AI summit must consider how to protect people from the harms occurring here and now, rather than solely focusing on the long-term risks of frontier AI.” The AI summit is due to be held in the UK on November 1-2. One of the latest developments, as reported by Reuters, is that China has decided to accept its invitation to the event. This is good because several Chinese companies are now developing their own genAI chatbots. Source: Which?

  9. Gmail is working to cut down on spam at the source from 2024 by Paul Hill Gmail is going to be getting several changes by February 2024 that aim to cut down on the amount of spam messages being sent by malicious actors. The three changes that Google will be bringing in include senders authenticating their emails, making it easy to unsubscribe from unwanted messages, and ensuring senders are sending wanted emails. Google said that anyone sending significant volumes of emails will be required to ‘strongly authenticate their emails’ following best practices to help close exploited loopholes used by attackers to threaten users of email. To help users stop getting emails they no longer care about, Google is making it so that senders have to give users a one-click option to unsubscribe from their commercial emails. Senders have to remove contacts from their subscription lists within two days of getting the request. Google said that these requirements are now open standards so non-Gmail users benefit as well. The final measure Gmail is taking is the implementation of a clear spam rate which senders must stay below so Gmail recipients aren’t bombarded with unwanted emails. Google said this is an industry first and should result in users getting fewer spammy emails. Google said that Gmail already uses various defenses to cut down on the majority of spam, phishing, and malware. However, it said that the challenges arising now are becoming more complex and that the measures announced today are required to tackle these issues. As a very significant number of people have Gmail addresses, these measures should benefit a lot of people. They should also help to prevent spam from originating from Gmail accounts. Let us know in the comments if you’ve noticed more spam, phishing, or malware delivered to your inbox increasingly over the last few years. Are you happy to see these measures rolling out? 11. U.S. government to investigate Microsoft's role in China-backed email breach by Omer Dursun U.S. government data security is again under scrutiny after a recent data breach by suspected Chinese hackers. Microsoft's role in protecting sensitive information will be examined following the cyber attack that compromised the email accounts of U.S. officials. A U.S. cybersecurity advisory panel announced it will investigate potential risks in cloud computing, including Microsoft's role in the recent breach of government email systems. The Cyber Safety Review Board (CSRB) will examine risks related to cloud infrastructure. The probe comes after suspected Chinese hackers exploited a vulnerability in Microsoft Azure's cloud email platform to access sensitive communications from the Departments of Commerce and State. The tech giant is among the major cloud providers that will be examined in the CSRB's investigation. The hacks, believed to be part of a wider espionage campaign by actors affiliated with the Chinese government, compromised email accounts belonging to senior officials. Microsoft has faced increased scrutiny over the incident, with Senator Ron Wyden calling on federal agencies last month to take action against the company. In a letter, Senator Wyden said: Government emails were stolen because Microsoft committed another error. Although the stolen encryption key was for consumer accounts, a validation error in Microsoft code' allowed the hackers to also create fake tokens for Microsoft-hosted accounts for government agencies and other organizations and thereby access those accounts. The senator criticized Microsoft's handling of the hack, saying it failed to take responsibility for previous incidents like the 2020 SolarWinds campaign attributed to Russia. The probe underscores growing concerns around security risks posed by third-party cloud services, which have become ubiquitous in government and corporate networks. Findings from the review could inform efforts to safeguard better sensitive data and critical systems hosted in the cloud. The House Oversight Committee announced it is opening a separate investigation into China's suspected role in the Microsoft email system breaches last week. The CSRB plans to focus on identifying and mitigating cloud security risks. Source: Bloomberg

  13. Microsoft offers more info on how Chinese hackers got access to government email accounts by John Callaham Last week, Microsoft reported that a group of Chinese hackers got access to government email accounts in the US and Europe. Specifically, the hacker group entered email accounts that were using Microsoft's Outlook Web Access in Exchange Online and also on Outlook.com. In a follow-up blog post, Microsoft offered some more details about how this group, known as Storm-0558, managed to gain access to these accounts using the company's online system. Microsoft stated: Storm-0558 acquired an inactive MSA consumer signing key and used it to forge authentication tokens for Azure AD enterprise and MSA consumer to access OWA and Outlook.com. All MSA keys active prior to the incident – including the actor-acquired MSA signing key – have been invalidated. Azure AD keys were not impacted. The method by which the actor acquired the key is a matter of ongoing investigation. Though the key was intended only for MSA accounts, a validation issue allowed this key to be trusted for signing Azure AD tokens. This issue has been corrected. The blog also explains how the hacker group used this signing key to gain access to the web version of Outlook: Once authenticated through a legitimate client flow leveraging the forged token, the threat actor accessed the OWA API to retrieve a token for Exchange Online from the GetAccessTokenForResource API used by OWA. The actor was able to obtain new access tokens by presenting one previously issued from this API due to a design flaw. This flaw in the GetAccessTokenForResourceAPI has since been fixed to only accept tokens issued from Azure AD or MSA respectively. The actor used these tokens to retrieve mail messages from the OWA API. As part of its efforts to fix this issue, Microsoft has made some changes in its procedures: This includes increased isolation of the systems, refined monitoring of system activity, and moving to the hardened key store used for our enterprise systems. We have revoked all previously active keys and issued new keys using these updated systems. Our active investigation indicates these hardening and isolation improvements disrupt the mechanisms we believe the actor could have used to acquire MSA signing keys. Microsoft says no action is needed from its Outlook web customers as it claims "all actor activity related to this incident has been blocked." It added that it will "continue to monitor Storm-0558 activity and implement protections for our customers.

    Betterbird 102.13.0-bb38

Betterbird 102.13.0-bb38 by Razvan Serea Betterbird is a fine-tuned version of Mozilla Thunderbird, Thunderbird on steroids, if you will. Betterbird aims at providing a better user experience by fixing annoying bugs in Thunderbird and implementing new features. Please refer to this feature table for examples. This should give you an impression of where the project is headed. Betterbird is a soft fork of Mozilla Thunderbird. Soft fork means that it is closely following the Thunderbird Extended Support Releases (ESR) therefore avoiding the mistakes of other forks which quickly lost track of upstream Thunderbird, thus opening users up to security vulnerabilities. Is Betterbird for me? If you like Thunderbird but are discouraged by too many bugs, then give Betterbird a try. It is 100% compatible with Thunderbird's ESR version. You can install the same dot release of Thunderbird in parallel and switch between Betterbird and Thunderbird on the same profile without problems and without needing the -allow-downgrade command line switch. Betterbird 102.13.0-bb38 changelog: Based on Thunderbird 115.0b6, release notes. 17. Google's email writing AI is now rolling out to Android and iPhone by Aditya Tiwari Google has started rolling out its email drafting tool Help Me Write to Android and iOS devices. The generative AI tool which is part of Workspace Labs was announced at Google I/O 2023 last month and it's already available on Gmail's web version for users to try out. Spotted by 9to5Google, the email writing tool on Android and iOS is similar to how it works on the desktop version of Gmail. You can throw natural language prompts at the AI which in turn drafts emails as per the requirement. The email draft can be refined with various options like Formalize, Elaborate, Shorten, or I'm Feeling Lucky. You can also ask the AI tool to re-write the text if you don't like the draft at all, however, you won't be able to go back to the previous version after that. Help Me Write is available as part of Google Workspace Labs, a testing program that allows users to try out new AI features in Google's work apps such as Gmail, Docs, or Slides. However, Google cautions that you shouldn't consider "Workspace Labs features as medical, legal, financial or other professional advice." To use Help Me Write, open the Gmail app on your Android or iPhone, then tap the Compose button. Here, you'll find the Help Me Write button in the bottom right corner of the screen. You can edit the text generated by the AI as per your liking and also send feedback to Google. You need to sign up for Google Workspace Labs to use Help Me Write on your device. It might take a while for the feature to arrive on your mobile app if you joined the program recently. Google's AI writing assistant is also available on Google Docs where you can give prompts to write a blog post or rewrite existing text to add more detail. Speaking of which, WordPress recently got an AI-powered writing assistant that can draft blog posts, translate language, and offer grammar suggestions.

    Betterbird 102.12.0-bb37

Betterbird 102.12.0-bb37 by Razvan Serea Betterbird is a fine-tuned version of Mozilla Thunderbird, Thunderbird on steroids, if you will. 22. Microsoft releases new Pride themes for Outlook users on Mac by Rahul Naskar LGBTQIA pride month is typically June, and we're a few days away. And to celebrate Pride month, Microsoft has released as many as five colorful themes, inspired by the Pride, Lesbian, Bisexual, Non-binary, and Transgender flags, for Outlook for Mac. The new Pride themes are currently limited to Outlook users for Mac for some odd reasons. A better commemoration would be to release these Pride-inspired themes for all its services across different platforms. Those using Outlook on Windows should also get access to apply Pride themes to celebrate LGBTQIA month. Meanwhile, if you are using Outlook on a Mac, you can follow the steps below to apply new Pride themes: Click Outlook in the macOS Menu bar. Select Settings (select Preferences if you are using anything below macOS 13). Click General. Select the one you want from the five Pride themes listed under Theme. However, in its official blog post, Microsoft has also pointed out that these new Outlook themes are limited to Insiders running Version 16.73 (Build 23042600) or later. If you are not a Microsoft 365 Insider running the required build, you will not see them on the Outlook settings page. That said, these themes should be ready to reach the general public starting in June. We hope they will make their way to Outlook for Windows and the web next month.

  25. Google has added blue verification checkmarks to Gmail by Aditya Tiwari While Twitter appears to be playing hide-and-seek with its blue verification badges, Google announced that it's adding blue checkmarks to Gmail in an attempt to boost security on the platform. This builds on top of its existing vetting system called BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) which requires verified brand logos to be displayed as avatars in emails. Google said its new checkmark will show up beside the email addresses of senders who have adopted BIMI and it "will help users identify messages from legitimate senders versus impersonators." As per the example image shared by Google, the verification badge is a blue-colored icon with a white tick in the middle. When hovered upon, it reveals that the sender has verified their domain and the logo in the profile image. The blue checkmarks will be visible to all users with personal Google accounts, all Google Workspace customers, and legacy G Suite users. Google said that end users don't need to take any action but interested admins can set up BIMI and get a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) for their brand logo among various formalities. It will take around three days for the checkmark to roll out across multiple versions of Gmail. The company notes that strong email authentication helps spot and prevent spam content, and enables senders to leverage their brand trust. This in turn boosts confidence in email sources.
