  1. PSA: Microsoft is pushing the web based Outlook to Windows users without giving the option to decline syncing email to their servers and keep using the existing clients. Hopefully the way around this (source) is to delete settings.json from %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Migration without agreeing to sync contents when The New Outlook first launches. I have been happily using the built-in Mail application since Windows 8, when they added support for Email, Contacts and Calendar syncing with Google accounts, and have been doing my best to avoid The New Outlook like the plague it is. Not only Microsoft's replacement mail app is a ###### Electron wrapper for the online version, it comes with ads AND to work it requires everything to be synced to "The Microsoft Cloud", so instead of just Google reading through my email to advertise, I'd have to allow Microsoft to do so too. Up until now, this meant living with a new toggle in the toolbar and dismissing messages inviting me to to turn it on, but today was different: I got a message saying that on the next start of the Mail app I'd be moved to The New Outlook and I'd be able to toggle back afterwards, no option to refuse. At that point, I checked my installed apps and The New Outlook was there again (I had removed it once already when it first popped up). I then closed the Mail app, waited a bit, and tried to reopen it. Sure enough, the app closed itself immediately and launched The New Outlook, which is where things get interesting: on launch, the only thing displayed is a wizard asking to enable syncing content in the Gmail account to "The Microsoft Cloud", with no option to refuse except by creating a new Outlook.com account. The rest of the window is empty, with no toggle to go back to the old Mail app (I assume it only shows up in the main UI after the wizard is complete) After poking around a bit, I closed the app, without clicking the Continue button in the content sync dialog. Further attempts to launch Mail would repeat the same behaviour, basically locking me out of checking my own email. It was only by finding this support article that I found a way to have the old Mail app launch again - by deleting settings.json from %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Migration At this point my worry is: did I actually prevent the syncing of my data to Microsoft's servers? Is there any way to check? If someone has gone through these steps, does the syncing need to be approved via Google's Oauth2 flow or does Microsoft just reuse the original authorization Windows gets when adding a Gmail account?

    Mailspring 1.11.0

Mailspring 1.11.0 by Razvan Serea Mailspring is a new version of Nylas Mail maintained by one of the original authors. It's faster, leaner, and shipping today! Mailspring supports all IMAP providers, including Gmail, Office 365 and iCloud. It sports features such as an unified inbox, snoozing, reminders, templates, offline search, and support for Gmail labels. Mailspring is free for Mac, Windows, and Linux. However, if you use features like Snooze, Send Later, Send Reminders and Read Receipts often, you'll need to purchase a subscription to Mailspring Pro within the app. All of these features run in the client - Mailspring does not send your email credentials to the cloud. Mailspring 1.11.0 release notes: Features The "Move to Folder" menu action allows you to press Tab or the "→" key to complete the name of the highlighted folder, which makes it easier to complete a path in long folder hierarchies. Mailspring now properly identifies and formats quoted text from Yahoo and AOL email. (Thanks @nzayatz14) On MacOS, the Mailspring icon in the dock now allows you to compose a new message from the context menu. (thanks @Naroh091) Mailspring's menu bar icon is now red for new mail and blue for unread mail, which makes it easier to spot a new message that needs attention. (#2433, thanks @marivaldojr) Bug Fixes Contact sync no longer crashes when a contact has no display name (thanks @ww-daniel-mora) The help menu now offers the standard MacOS "menu search" feature (Thanks @probablykasper) Colons are allowed in URLs and no longer break Mailspring's link highlighting. (thanks @choptastic!) The email preview is no longer in some cases in vertical layout (thanks @glenn2223!) Updated Italian translations (thanks @andy00087!) Developer Mailspring now uses a more restrictive Content-Security-Policy that includes object-src none; media-src mailspring:; manifest-src none;. If your plugin packaged media such as sounds, you may need to reference them via the mailspring:// URL syntax (ala 2b75347) Download: Mailspring 1.11.0 | Other Operating Systems | 156.0 MB (Open Source) View: Mailspring Homepage | Mailspring Screenshot Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware

    Betterbird 102.13.0-bb38

Betterbird 102.13.0-bb38 by Razvan Serea Betterbird is a fine-tuned version of Mozilla Thunderbird, Thunderbird on steroids, if you will. Betterbird aims at providing a better user experience by fixing annoying bugs in Thunderbird and implementing new features. Please refer to this feature table for examples. This should give you an impression of where the project is headed. Betterbird is a soft fork of Mozilla Thunderbird. Soft fork means that it is closely following the Thunderbird Extended Support Releases (ESR) therefore avoiding the mistakes of other forks which quickly lost track of upstream Thunderbird, thus opening users up to security vulnerabilities. Is Betterbird for me? If you like Thunderbird but are discouraged by too many bugs, then give Betterbird a try. It is 100% compatible with Thunderbird's ESR version. You can install the same dot release of Thunderbird in parallel and switch between Betterbird and Thunderbird on the same profile without problems and without needing the -allow-downgrade command line switch. Betterbird 102.13.0-bb38 changelog: Based on Thunderbird 115.0b6, release notes. RESTORED - Menu bar at the top of the main window (not underneath the new unified toolbar) RESTORED - Total and unread/selected count removed from status bar - Bug 1831667 RESTORED - No more connecting lines in threaded view - Bug 1829470 RESTORED - Visual feedback during Quick Filter Search - Bug 1831500 RESTORED - Broken feed functionality, a lot of breakage in Thunderbird "Supernova": Feed updates, icons, etc. NEW - New preference gloda.list.immediate to show the search result as list immediately without having to click "Show results as list". 7. Microsoft now says the new Outlook will replace Mail and Calendar apps by the end of 2024 by John Callaham The confusion over Microsoft's plans to retire the current Mail and Calendar apps for Windows with the new Outlook for Windows app continues. Last week, Microsoft sent a message to Microsoft 365 admins stating the Mail and Calendar apps would be replaced by the new Outlook starting in September 2024. However, an apparent backlash against that timeframe caused Microsoft to send out a follow-up message stating it was now "reevaluating the timeline". Now, a new post on the Microsoft 365 message center, as shown by Windows enthusiast Tero Alhonen on Twitter, states that Microsoft won't replace the apps with Outlook until sometime "by the end of next year." This newly vague timeline shows Microsoft still doesn't have a firm date yet, and may not have one for some time. Updated future of the Mail and Calendar apps in Windows with Outlook Updated June 20, 2023: We have updated the content below for clarity. By the end of next year we will be replacing the Mail and Calendar apps in Windows with the new Outlook for Windows… pic.twitter.com/qv6ijfpaSh — Tero Alhonen💙💛 (@teroalhonen) June 20, 2023 The message post also states that while Microsoft 365 and Office 365 subscribers will be able to use the new Outlook for Windows app, people without such a subscription "will need to manage their email and calendar in Outlook on the web" after those Email and Calendar apps are retired. This seems like an odd decision to make for people who would simply like to use the Outlook Windows app as a desktop email client. Indeed. Microsoft has already released the latest version of Outlook for Mac PCs as a free client, with no need for a Microsoft or Office 365 subscription. The good news is that there's still a ton of time before all these changes are supposed to be made, so Microsoft could make some additional adjustments to its plans in the weeks and months to come.
  8. Microsoft is now "reevaluating the timing" for dumping Mail, Calendar apps with new Outlook by John Callaham Late last week, Microsoft informed customers of its Microsoft 365 program that it planned to start replacing the current Windows Mail and Calendar apps with the new Outlook app in September 2024. Now it looks like the company is backtracking on that plan, at least for the moment. Twitter user Michael Reinders posted a screenshot of the updated post from the Microsoft 365 Message Center that stated: We are reevaluating the timing and implementation of this change and will provide information shortly. Thank you for your patience. Reinders indicated in other replies to this post that a number of Microsoft 365 customers complained about when this change would be made. On the face of it, this seems like a strange thing to complain about, as Microsoft was giving users well over a year before this transition was supposed to take place. There's some speculation that the transition date to the new Outlook to September 2024 could be a clue that Microsoft also intends to launch Windows 12, which could have Outlook as the default mail and calendar app, in that time frame as well. However, there's no direct evidence that this is indeed the case. In any event, It does look like Microsoft has received enough complaints about getting rid of Mail and Calendar apps to the new Outlook that we may be getting a new transition date soon that may push that September 2024 timeline behind by several months, if not longer. Microsoft has already stated that once the move from Mail and Calendar apps to the new Outlook is made, those older apps won't be available to download anymore. They have also said that the new Outlook will let users access any email account without needing a Microsoft 365 paid subscription. The recently updated Outlook app for Mac is completely free to use already.

    Betterbird 102.9.1-bb32

Betterbird 102.9.1-bb32 by Razvan Serea Betterbird is a fine-tuned version of Mozilla Thunderbird, Thunderbird on steroids, if you will. Betterbird 102.9.1-bb32 changelog: Based on Thunderbird 102.9.1 Fixed in this version: CHANGED - Improved the Sending progress dialogue, no longer showing 100% when sending is cancelled CHANGED - Improved the Sending progress dialogue: Now works during retry if previous dialogue was cancelled - Bug 1824624 CHANGED - Linux: Using EGL 1.5 graphics now instead of GLX 1.4 fixing fuzzy fonts for some users CHANGED - Linux: Now supporting sideloaded "application" add-ons stored in betterbird/extensions. To enable those add-ons, pref extensions.autoDisableScopes needs to be set to 3. CHANGED - Multi-line support when add-on "Conversations" is used. Second line can be aligned with "Between" column. Fixed in Betterbird, not fixed in Thunderbird 102.9.1 yet: FIXED - Hang when viewing HTML message with many links as plain text (possible denial of service attack vector) (fixed in 102.9.0) - Bug 1812386 FIXED - Subscribe/Unsubscribe buttons didn't check/uncheck the respective checkbox for the folder) (fixed in 102.7.1) - Bug 1813346 CHANGED - Selecting or unselecting a dictionary in the editor context menu doesn't close the menu (fixed in 102.0) - Bug 1761417 FIXED - Various problems when saving the compose window as file (fixed in 91.9.1) - Bug 1676825 FIXED - Status text sometimes displayed "null" (fixed in 91.9.0) - Bug 1766578 FIXED - .startup-incomplete not deleted from profile (fixed in 91.8.0) - Bug 1762043 FIXED - Inserting links with spaces gave random erroneous results (fixed in 91.0) [full release notes] Download: Betterbird 102.9.1-bb32 | 52.0 MB (Freeware) Download: Betterbird Portable 76.0 MB View: Betterbird Homepage | Other Operating Systems Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware

    Mailspring 1.10.6

Mailspring 1.10.6 by Razvan Serea Mailspring is a new version of Nylas Mail maintained by one of the original authors. Mailspring 1.10.6 release notes: Features The send later delay can be skipped by clicking the new Send now instead button (localization required) Changes Mailsync now requests fewer emails at a time, fixing compatibility issues with large Office365 accounts. (Thanks @BrandonGillis for extensive testing of this change!) Inline image "cid:" references may appear only in %E2%80%9C%E2%80%9D, and may not appear elsewhere in message bodies. Mailspring uses iframe sandboxing to disallow interactivity in message bodies, in addition to santizing loaded HTML down to a strict list of tags and attributes. Fixes a rare ResizeObserver error loop caused by messages resizing as they're unmounted. Mailspring's Flatpak version number has been updated. The Brazilian Portuguese translation has been reviewed and refined by @matheusreich (#2429) Fix the vertical overflow bug (Community - 3507) (Thanks @glenn2223! #2423) Fix [Message Clipped - Show All] link (Thanks @glenn2223! #2426) The message participant list is easier to interact with, thanks to several adjustments by @glenn2223! See #2425 for more details. The "Recent Emails" content in Mailspring's sidebar now displays the weekday and time (eg: "Mon, 10:15") and shows 5 days of emails rather than 2. 24. Microsoft is working with Apple on an iOS update to improve Exchange Online security by Usama Jawad Basic authentication is an old industry standard that is used to verify client-server connections. However, in recent years, it has proved to be a significant attack vector to compromise data security. As such, most software vendors have been ditching the aging mechanism and gravitating towards Modern authentication based on OAuth 2.0 for increased security. This is also the case with the Apple Mail app which switched to Modern authentication several years ago. However, this meant that only new accounts which were added to a device after this migration from Basic to Modern authentication took place could enjoy the benefits of better security while older accounts remained stuck with Basic authentication. This problem even extended to the original configuration propagating across new devices and backups. Microsoft is now tackling this issue once and for all by collaborating with Apple. While the details are a bit technical, basically what will happen is that Apple will integrate support for the Resource Owner Password Credential (ROPC) grant in a future iOS update. This handler ensures that apps use the credentials stored on your device in a secure manner. Following this update, the Mail app will use ROPC to leverage your existing credentials to create an authentication flow for Exchange Online account with Azure Active Directory. You will receive OAuth tokens in response, your account will be configured to permanently use Modern authentication, and finally, Basic authentication credentials will be removed. To make this transition as smooth as possible, Microsoft has encouraged tenant admins to check controls and policies such as Conditional Access (CA) and Multi-factor Authentication (MFA), which may require input from users before the switch is made. Similarly, it has also encouraged admins to grant resource access to the Mail app at a tenant level so that every user does not have to individually approve permissions. However, if you use a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution, the switch to Modern authentication will not automatically take place and you will need to collaborate with your MDM vendor to ensure that you are using the ROPC workflow in the Mail app. There are some detailed instructions for IT admins in Microsoft's blog post here. However, the key points for consumers to understand is that this authentication workflow switch will happen in an upcoming iOS and iPadOS update. The same capability will also arrive for macOS at some point. Clients using certificate-based authentication mechanisms will remain unaffected.
